Villarreal interested in Juan Foyth as Jose Mourinho has final say on a transfer

|

According to AS, Villarreal are interested in Juan Foyth and want to make him their first-choice right-back for the 2020/21 campaign. The 22-year-old has an uncertain future at Tottenham as he’s struggled for playing time in the last 12 months and is currently transfer-listed.

Foyth initially wanted out of Tottenham due to a lack of opportunities, but he’s since made a U-turn on the decision and is now happy to stay. AS say Villarreal landing Foyth’s signature will depend on Jose Mourinho, however, so it’s up in the air whether he’ll go or not.

Foyth may need to leave for more game time

Foyth’s agent Claudio Curti told talkSPORT in May that his client would seek an exit from Tottenham if he continued to be on the periphery. Foyth has only made 32 appearances in all competitions since joining Spurs from Estudiantes in 2017 and racked up only seven appearances across the board last season.

Jan Vertonghen (2250), Toby Alderweireld (3768), Davinson Sanchez (3269), Eric Dier (2130) and Japhet Tanganga (952) amassed more minutes than Foyth (262) in 2019/20, so the Argentine needs to admit defeat. He’s not going to hold down a regular spot in our defence and should consider a departure for the sake of his development.

Foyth is now reticent to leave, however, so it may take an attractive proposal to lure him away from North London.

How much could we make?

CIES Football Observatory say Foyth is worth €7m-€10m (£6.24m-£8.9m), Transferzone estimate his market value is €8.44m (£7.5m) and Transfermarkt believe the defender is £12.15m. We paid £12m for Foyth in 2017 and are after £15m, so we could end up making a profit and covering his wages. Time will tell.

The money from Foyth’s sale could go towards a replacement and we’ve been linked with West Ham’s Issa Diop, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ben White, Beijing Guoan’s Kim Min-jae, Brighton’s Lewis Dunk, Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, Schalke 04’s Ozan Kabak, Norwich City’s Ben Godfrey, Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer and Leeds United’s Robin Koch and AS Monaco’s Guillermo Maripán this summer, so Villarreal stand a good chance of procuring his signature.
