Juan Foyth could leave Tottenham as Leeds United are tipped to complete £15m deal

|

According to The Sun, Juan Foyth could be on his way out of Tottenham this summer amid interest from Leeds United. The 22-year-old is surplus to requirements under Jose Mourinho and may be sold to generate funds for new arrivals, but his asking price has yet to be met.

Foyth has wanted out of Tottenham for a long time. He’s been public about his frustration over a lack of appearances and never rule out the possibility of leaving to get more first-team football. The Argentine international has recently made a U-turn on that stance, however, so his future is up in the air.

Are we right to put Foyth up for sale?

Sadly, yes. The 22-year-old has made only 32 appearances since joining from Estudiantes in 2017 and is coming off the back of his worth campaign for playing time (seven appearances in all competitions and 262 minutes of football).

With Japhet Tanganga (952), Eric Dier (2130), Jan Vertonghen (2250), Davinson Sanchez (3269), Toby Alderweireld (3768) racking up more minutes across the board than Foyth last season, it’s hard to see him featuring a lot in 2020/21. Foyth looked set to be our first-choice right-back 12 months ago, but he’s now unwanted and not needed as a centre-back.

The fact we’re on the hunt for a replacement this summer suggests Foyth would fall further down the pecking order, so Leeds have the green light to make a move.

How much will we get for Foyth?

Daniel Levy paid just shy of £12m for the 22-year-old three years ago and still believes he can make a profit. CIES Football Observatory believe Foyth is worth €7m-€10m (£6.24m-£8.9m), Transferzone say his market value is €8.44m (£7.5m) and Transfermarkt value the defender at £12.15m. We’re after £15m, however, as Levy wants the 2017 transfer fee and subsequent wages covered.

Summary

Foyth had his moments and was unfortunate with injuries, but it’s clear he’s not going to be a regular in our backline. If there are suitors willing to pay his asking price, it’s probably time to let him go. We’re looking for another defender after Jan Vertonghen’s departure, so that will leave us with four centre-backs ahead of the new season.
