Tottenham given boost in Troy Deeney pursuit as Watford will agree to transfer

|

Tottenham’s pursuit of a striker has seen them register interest in Callum Wilson, Patson Daka, Loren Moron, Arkadiusz Milik, Mario Mandzukic, Patrik Schick, Robin Quaison, Habib Diallo, Vedat Muriqi and Rhian Brewster, but Troy Deeney’s name was the biggest surprise at the time.

Since we’ve signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton, Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Joe Hart from Burnley, however, it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise seeing Deeney make the switch to North London.

The Daily Mail say Watford are resigned to selling the 32-year-old this summer, so he could be ours if we make a move.

Value for money?

Watford turned down £30m from Leicester for Deeney in the past, but he should be available for a lot less now. Transfermarkt say the Englishman’s market value is £5.85m, which is closer to what he should be worth this summer.

Deeney’s made a total of 398 appearances in all competitions since joining the Hornets from Walsall in 2010, scoring 133 goals with 59 assists. He’s hit double figures for Premier League goals in three of the last four seasons, so we could do a lot worse.

Deeney is in the final year of his deal at Vicarage Road, is in the eve of his career and is playing for a side in the Championship, so we shouldn’t have to pay a lot of money to sign him. Spotrac say Deeney was earning £65k-per-week/£3.38m-a-year at Watford, so his wage demands won’t break the bank.

Odds of us signing Deeney?

Getting slimmer by the day. Deeney believes he belongs in the Premier League and is open to leaving Watford, but all the talk about our alleged pursuit has died down in recent weeks. We’ve instead pushed for Wilson and Watkins to no avail.

The Athletic say Deeney is still being considered as cover for Harry Kane, but Football Insider say West Bromwich Albion are now leading the race for his signature. The 32-year-old would be useful in a backup role, but might he prefer more regular playing time with Albion?
