Tottenham dealt transfer blow in pursuit of Patson Daka

|

Tottenham want a striker to take the scoring burden off Harry Kane & Heung-min Son and have been linked with Callum Wilson, Loren Moron, Troy Deeney, Vedat Muriqi, Arkadiusz Milik, Patrik Schick, Robin Quaison, Mario Mandzukic Habib Diallo and Rhian Brewster, but Football.London say Patson Daka is the latest to get our attention.

We’re not the only club interested with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United eyeing the 21-year-old, but Football.London believe Daka wants to stay at RB Salzburg striker for another season. A deal looks dead in the water as a result, so we’ll have to turn our attentions elsewhere.

How good is Daka?

Pretty good. The Zambian international has made 84 appearances in all competitions since joining Salzburg from Kafue Celtic FC in 2017, scoring 38 goals with 15 assists. Daka is coming off the back of his most prolific campaign in Austria, scoring 24 goals in 31 Bundesliga games, so it’s easy to see why we’ve shown an interest.

Unfortunately, Salzburg are keen to keep their star player this summer and no obligation to sell given his contract has four more years to run. Die Mozartstädter tied Daka down to a long-term deal in December 2019, so they hold all the cards.

Will we sign a striker before the window shuts?

Here’s hoping. The summer transfer window closes in a matter of weeks and the 2020/21 season begins this weekend, so we’re running out of time to bolster our offensive line.

Troy Parrot was the only natural striker who could provide cover for Kane and Son, but he’s since been loaned out to Millwall so there’s a void for somebody to fill. Using Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura in a makeshift role isn’t a good long-term solution.

Unfortunately, we don’t have lucrative funds for new arrivals and have been outbid for Callum Wilson and Ollie Watkins by Newcastle United and Aston Villa respectably, so it remains to be seen who we’ll end up getting.

If we can generate cash through the sale of unwanted players, we’ll give ourselves a chance to bring in quality.

Summary

Daka is certainly a loss. He looks the real deal in Austria and has a lot of clubs keen on his signature, but Salzburg don’t want to sell and the 21-year-old doesn’t want to leave.

In other news, Tottenham will NOT be signing Sergio Reguilón, so go back to sleep
