Tottenham will NOT be signing Sergio Reguilón, so go back to sleep

|

According to AS (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham have made a move for Sergio Reguilon and may have to battle Manchester United and Chelsea to procure his signature.

Jose Mourinho is believed to have contacted the 23-year-old personally, but it remains to be seen if he prefers a move to Spurs over United or Chelsea. It also remains to be seen if we need a left-back when Ben Davies has been a reliable servant.

What would Reguilon bring to our squad?

The Spanish international spent last season on loan with Sevilla (July 5, 2019 – August 22, 2020) and went on to make 38 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals with five assists. He’s a forward-thinking left-back who can supplement the attack and do his defensive duties.

As per WhoScored, Reguilon amassed 2509 minutes in La Liga, created 41 chances, whipped in 100 crosses with 28% finding a teammate, won 40/80 aerial duels, made 49/69 successful dribbles, had 28 shots with 25% hitting the target, blocked 36 passes/crosses/shots, made 42 clearances, won 46 free-kicks and averaged a tackle (57) or interception (33) every 28 minutes.

Why are we being linked?

Danny Rose is expected to leave this summer as he’s surplus to requirements under Mourinho, so I think the media believe we want to bring in a replacement.

They appear to be forgetting that we’ll have Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon to pick from, however, so we don’t need another new face at left-back. Dennis Cirkin is another option for Mourinho and is highly rated too, so we noe have a third player at our disposal without including Rose.

Chelsea signed Ben Chilwell from Leicester City, so it’s hard to see them making a genuine approach for Reguilon. United appear the closest to agreeing a deal for the 23-year-old too, so it makes little sense why we’re getting linked?

Summary

Reguilon is a good player who wouldn’t be out of place in our squad, but there’s no reason we should sign him when we already have Davies, Sessegnon and Cirkin at left-back. I believe our money would be better spent strengthening weak areas of the side.
