Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

  • Pauric says:

The next manager will be Bill Bilichick the New England patriots coach, our esteemed chairman is turning Tottenham into a American franchise. You may start buying your helmets and pads Danny boy is bringing the super bowl home yeah baby. Imagine Eric Dier MVP Hall of fame. Go d mighty spurs, o my god.

  • TK says:

Pauric, we’ve already got an NFL American football field under our pitch at WHL. That’s what i’d call Solid Evidence to support your argument. But the real thing DL would love about Bill Belichick is that he sells away almost any player whose salary demands go up. He’s won more titles than anyone and kept the payroll low. Every player is expendible to Bill Belichick.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Sounds liike the perfect manager! You don’t have to have played the game to be successful, just look at Lawrie McMenemy at Southampton in the seventies, he was a professional soldier in one of the guards regiments. 🙂

  • TK says:

Belichick is 69 and making rumbles about retirement.

  • 123spurs says:

No way pep should of got it, a league they buy and worthless Cup and fecked up UCL final. For me moyas or tuchel for sure

  • TK says:

Belichick would fit right in to the present madness we are experiencing in hiring a manager. His previous manager’s job (head coach) was with the New York Jets (who don’t even play in New York). He quit after one day. One Day. And took the same job from arch-rivals New England Patriots, where he remains after 21 years and 7 championships. He’s been censured numerous times for serious rule infractions, including spying on other teams will illegal video cameras and manipulating the air pressure inside the footballs during games. I’m sure he would do us proud. LOL.

by the way, he’s stayed with the Patriots all these years because he has total control over everything–recruitment, salaries, hiring others in the club. everything. He tolerates no interference in anything he does with the club. Hard to imagine him with DL.

  • TK says:

123, these awards appear like corrupt “good old boys” awards. doled out like personal favours.

    • Frank says:

So Cante joins the ranks of managers not coming to Spurs. We will soon be reduced to asking for applications for the job in an advertisement in Football Monthly or a similar publication. This whole affair does our erstwhile chairman and our beloved Spurs no credit whatsoever. How did he sack JM without holding his usual clandestine meeting with his chosen successor as he has always done before. Perhaps as some of us have always suspected he isn’t the Mr Fixit he kids himself he is.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I see there is a new twist to the saga, it is reported that Conte is holding out for the PSG job that isn’t currently available but the players there have told the bosses that they don’t want him as manager. That’s a shame as PSG would suit Conte better than Spurs and it would release Poch to come back.

  • Frank says:

What price a resounding decision to appoint Howe or Potter or Wilder. After all if we want to go backwards, let’s do it at pace, not bugger about. Never mind, we have a shiny new stadium, even if we only have an average at best team to play in it.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

At least Levy will sleep well tonight. The season ticket renewals are in and I am sure the Poch/Conte fake talks were enough to ensure they most people renewed.
Now Levy can concentrate on getting his yes man who will work with the youngsters, accept Kane leaving and accept that most of the proceeds will not be reinvested in the squad. Levy will sell it as a long term project with great youngsters to work with. In all honesty we have some decent youngsters but nothing amazing. Meanwhile the gullible fans will continue to pay the most expensive prices in Europe whilst being served up mediocre mid-table football. What an embarrassing, pathetic, rudderless football club we have become – all thanks to one man, the pathetic incompetent Daniel Levy. Amazing how no expense was spared on the stadium, how Levy is happy to charge the highest prices in Europe whilst caring not one jot about the quality of the football. Shameful.

  • TK says:

Frank, an average team that is about to lose the world’s best player. What are we without Kane? perhaps a bit below average?

  • TK says:

Every once in a while there is a story is the news in the USA about the possibility of expanding the NFL to include a team in London. DL may be more interested and prepared for that than for building a world class team in football.

With the duplicity from his lips, DL seems to be preparing for a move to 10 Downing Street at some point. the situation of finding a manager for Spurs is beginning to drag out like a second Brexit. Full of false promises, and solutions that are rife with internal contradictions. I’m waiting to see what turns out to be the equivalent to the customs border between Nord Iron and England. A THFC franchise in the NFL while we’re in the second division in England? No relegation in the NFL. If a billionaire buys a team in America and never wins a game, there is still no relegation. Daniel’s Dream, perchance?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Villa potentially showing ambition with the signing of Buendia from Norwich for a reported £33m rising to £40m with add-ons. I say potentially, depends on whether he is a replacement for Grealish or not.

Going to be the same old story I suppose, everyone else getting their main business done before pre-season while we fanny about.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

TQ2Spurs, ambition you say, being a Spurs fan for some time this is not a term I am familiar with. Can you please explain what it means.

  • BelgianSpur says:

TQ2Spurs – I just read your post about Conte not believing Spurs could win things now, and therefore, according to you, not being interested in building one.

The reality is that we just don’t know if that’s the case. Conte may have been very interested in building a winning team instead of inheriting one, but he will have known all too well that building a winning team costs money.

If Levy has no intention of aggressively backing his new manager, and that the incumbent will mostly have to make do with the players in the squad today, I could totally understand why Conte would have questioned the potential to be successful at Spurs, with the current squad. We’ve seen that even the best of man managers (MP) can only take the current players so far.

At the very least, watching Conte, yet another proven manager, doubting whether the conditions are in place for Spurs to challenge in the short term, has to be somewhat concerning.

And it should certainly invite doubt in those fans believing Levy wouldn’t have sacked JM if he didn’t have a firm plan in place. The more this drags on, the more it looks like an impulsive, rash decision with no clear succession plan in place, or a clear idea on how to take the club forward.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

That’s just what I’m reading BS, those writing about it (and there is more than one journo) are in a much better position than me to make this claim. I choose to believe it and is why I suggest he would be a better fit at PSG, they already have a squad full of big names and owners who can afford more.

  • TK says:

    BS,

Firing Mourinho was the right decision. Hiring him in the first place was a disastrous decision. Not having much of anything in mind about what to do after firing Mourinho also is turning out to be disastrous. Pay PSG and bring back Pochettino, now. Then give him a reasonable sum to bring in some players.

I would find the current situation would be downright embarrassing, if I had brought it about.

    • BelgianSpur says:

I am not saying we shouldn’t have moved on from Mourinho. I am just saying it could have been handled better, timing wise. Sacking him on the eve of a final was never going to send a positive message to prospective candidates. Even if the goal was to sack JM at the end of the season, letting him see out the season would have been far more elegant, and perhaps raised less doubts about working for Levy.

  • El Jefe says:

To be fair Ten Haag sounds the best option going even with Conte, etc having been/still being in the mix, etc (whatever 1 chooses to believe basically)!

Good solid experience based on great work done at Ajax for several years now, won’t cost a packet in terms of wages or even in a “transfer” fee hopefully and should be relatively attracted by the PL, money/wages, a top 6 side and a club with a tradition of wanting and regularly playing similar to the Ajax style – beautiful football (even if nowhere near as successful as them in respective history) – what’s not to like for either side basically and we’ve always recruited well from Ajax also in the last decade or so (directly/indirectly) and should thus have a decent relationship overall (even for all of DL’s antics lol) – Vert’s, Eriksen, stretching the margins Davy (lol), Toby, etc!

Get the guy in and give him a decent go and put an end to this charade finally – need to start planning next season’s “assault” ASAP!

Now let’s face it – HK10 is gone – it’s just 2 question’s – what we get and how we use it!

Given this and given his age and contract situation I’d be willing to let Lloris go also – even if he’s still basically world class and in the top 3 Prem GK’s at the moment/for the time being and generally solid captain material – for me send him over to Poch and PSG (which makes so much sense) and get Areola in exchange – it’s a fair compromise for all!

Getting back to our prized main asset – HK10 – it surely has to be £150m minimum – irrespective of what is going on with the Pandemic currently (and at “only” £150m – it’s basically and actually pretty much factored into the bloody equation anyway – at least for me)! Easily the best player in the Prem (ridiculous he lost out to Dias on all those individual domestic awards and I’m half Portuguese LOL – best player in the Prem by far – END OF)! No Salah, De Bruyne, Fernandes, VVD, Dias, Alisson, Ederson, Laporte, etc, etc, etc!

Furthermore Man City will be desperate to replace Sergio and on top with that CL defeat – they themselves have admitted they want and still even need more quality – the England captain and best player in the Prem – PR wise off the field doesn’t come any better either – especially with his clean image on top, etc! They’ve also got big prize money this season off winning the PL (most lucrative in the world) and a CL final as well, etc and then their ludicrous “sponsorship” deals, etc, etc, etc! They can easily afford the £150m for HK10 so it’s just as well it’s DL pulling at their strings in this respect.

Thing is though – we should actually demand Jesus and Ake plus around at least £40m to seal the deal for me! Jesus has to be valued around £70m being fair, Ake around the same £40m they paid last year, so going with the magic £150m total or so – then we have to ask for around £40m extra for me!

We should then use that £40m or so (and I’d hope for some change of up to £5-10m given his contract situation) to go and get Ings and finally give the guy a go at a top 6 club! He’s only 12 months older than HK10 and arguably the 2nd best (based on completeness) English striker and 1 of the best in the Prem all the same also! 41 in 88 in a relatively constrained Southampton side (creativity wise) is extremely impressive and the guy now fully deserves a proper chance at long last at a “top” club in the Prem!

We then need to get in the long linked Aarons and Andersen finally – £30m and £25m respectively. We can raise this amount OK by selling the obvious: CCV, Foyth, Aurier, Toby, Sissoko, Lamela! I admit the other day I did say offering Lamela a new deal might be OK and also I’m not particularly happy with the Foyth situation but I can accept both leaving for the greater good of backing and funding these new signings!

So for me it would be:

    3 GK’s – Areola, Hart, Whitey!

6 CB’s – Ake, Andersen, Dier, Davy, Rodon, Tanganga.

    4 FB’s – Aarons, Doherty, Reguilon, Davies.

    3 DCM’s – Hoj, Winksy, Skippy.

    3 ACM’s – N’Dom, Dele, Gio.

    4 WGR’s – Sonny, Lucas, Bergs, Sess.

    2 STR’s – Ings, Jesus.

Then there’s Scarlett and Devine who have to be in and around this 1st team squad already for sure!

25 man senior squad – 10HG (including Ake – nice little bonus), 15 FGN – so we’re perfectly safe in term’s of FGN’s at long last! Plus those 2+ kids also if and as needed, etc!

Good flexibility also in this squad – given Dier can go DCM, Tanganga RB, Ake/Sess LB, Jesus (RW – indeed where I see him fitting especially if and hopefully with Ings comnig in), Sonny STR, etc, etc, etc!

Let me add quickly don’t see Sess as a LB – certainly not at the moment and his best times in the game so far have been as a LW and when attacking and scoring in that excellent season he had at Fulham when helping them up that 1st time and which created all the attention and interest, etc in the 1st place – back to basics for Sess for me and see what happens and take it from there quite frankly!

Then – Ings and Jesus to play together obviously – Jesus and Sonny off Ings for me and most likely Dele, N’Dom and Hoj behind them!

Now on the 1 hand we lose HK10, Lloris, etc and there’s no Bale comeback, JM is gone and no Conte/Poch return etc, etc, etc – but if you just consider how good all these guys coming are/could be added to the absolute fortune we’ll likely save in wages overall – it all starts to add up to a decent resolution of the current predicament, etc – (AGAIN) at least for me!

I’m not asking for the club to financially constrain itself further at all – indeed I think there’s even good money to be saved overall and we also make a very solid turn-around both in terms of manager and players, etc!

Indeed I think there’s also a good possibility of a transfer surplus (no mean thing) added to that wages saving (massive long term plus here) as well – very, very nice bonus when it likely works out as such especially in these “current” times, etc!

    Just my 2 bob’s, etc …………………………….. LOOOOOL!

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Which top six side are you suggesting for Ten Haag EJ, did you forget we finished 7th? :- )

  • El Jefe says:

I did recently and still admittedly (acceptably) say that Rodon and Tanganga should go out on loan and get vital experience – because there’s defo talent there in both of them – but they need to develop it properly and harness continued/repeated minutes – a la Skippy, Sess and even Foyth this season for 3 top examples already and within our very own club/structure, etc!

That said if we do so – it might leave us a little light in defence and in the interest of a complete 25 man senior squad I kept both in, but maybe we could afford to let 1 go certainly and even perhaps both – indeed Davies can cover CB and Sess can cover LB in desperation – so might well be worth the risk and we’ll likely get decent loan fees for both and save on wages on top – it all adds up and there’s always and nothing indeed to stop us putting in immediate re-call options if truly necessary (factoring in the economic side of such of course)!

A 23 man senior squad is still 2 good players to every position guaranteed and it also makes for easier and more intense/concentrated training sessions, etc as well!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

IMO Rodon is already better than Dier at LCB so maybe we should send the latter out on loan to learn his trade!
