Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

Morning TQ – we’ve still got much more claim to being a top 6 side than Arse-anal LOL – I think Leicester have more or less taken their spot at very least for now with 2 consecutive top 5 finishes most recently!

Indeed taken over the course of a lot of consecutive seasons (can’t be bothered to check exactly) we certainly are still on average a top 6 side and we just missed out this season by finishing 7th but no bloody way are Wet Spam a solid regular top 6 side – certainly not yet anyway and I doubt they’ll be able to maintain it to be perfectly honest – hopefully we for 1 already won’t be staying down for much longer as it is and probably the same for the super Scum mentioned earlier, etc!

I’d be more worried about Villa who seem to be putting together a very good 1st 11 minimum and let’s see what happens with Everton and even Wolves – Wet Spam for me just a flash in the pan – Lingard I doubt will be going there permanently, Rice soon off and that will pretty much put paid to them very quickly IMHO!

It’s these other 3 who are most likely to be the long term threat/challenge to the “established” top 6 – although you might well have to start calling it top 7 with Leicester now forcing there way in here and to help the super Scum save face LOOOOOOOL!

As for Ten Hag (got the spelling right at last) – most certainly a very interesting and relatively viable option – wouldn’t be disappointed in the slightest – good even great record so far and looks to play the game as we are looking for – naturally comes with the territory at Ajax, etc so we could do a lot worse – most probably starting with Conte already and having to break the bank again a la Poch and then Mourinho, etc and just for the “privilege” ………………………….!

I’d be OK with keeping Rodon and Tanganga and have them pushing all the way but can also see the advantages in both being loaned out for 6-12 months – let’s see what the new boss thinks – but we need 2 new CB’s for sure – RCB for Toby and LCB for Vert’s – end of for me!!!!!

  • El Jefe says:

TQ – just quickly on Rodon – don’t even recall seeing him play at all at LCB for us this last season – do you remember when you actually saw this?! He always seemed to be on the right on the few occasions JM played him – indeed I was specifically looking out for such to see if the talk of him being comfortable at LCB was indeed correct!

As for Dier – to be fair his correct position even as a CB is as a R-CB and not a L-CB – hence credit to him for trying to fill the “massive” void left by Vert’s – not just this last season but even the previous 1 also (we’ve been bloody gap filling here for a very long time now unfortunately) – where Vert’s was no longer his quality self and just a shadow of his past/former glory and we have been trying to tread water in this respect for at least 24 months now going on 36 if we are really honest with ourselves!

Most interesting indeed and if we go the route I suggested last night (which may well be forced upon us anyway depending on HK10’s stance, etc and the need for a squad turnaround again) – wouldn’t even need touching anyway!

  • Niall D says:

EJ good to see you back on form m8, whilst I agree about many of your players in, unfortunately for me, Dier and, Winks need to go, get Sabizer into that midfield.
I think Rodon did play on the left in at least one game last season along side Tobs not sure tho…

  • Pauric says:

El Jefe, what are you smoking mate?? The clubs a basket case mainly due to a complete incompetent chairman who has single handedly f****d it up because he’s a control freak. We had a good manager in Poch who pointed out to Levy and the board the squad was in need of major overhaul, what did Levy do about it Sweet F all. Poch had us in champions league football every season and made a bloody decent effort for the title on a tiny budget compared to the other big clubs, how many transfer windows did we go through on a zero spending deluge because of Levys over indulgence in his fantasy stadium hundreds of millions over.He sacked poch because it was the cheaper option rather than doing the unthinkable and backing his manger for a squad overhaul. The next cock up from Danny boy bringing a manager in Mourinho who’s track record in winning titles is second to none but one major problem every club club bar one Porto he ever managed backed him with hundreds of millions in transfers and top wages for players. So obviously fat Joe would go on a massive splurge?? Why else would you hire Mourinho?? It certainly wasn’t for working with the youth team and developing them into senior Premier league footballers. It was a complete and utter panic appointment bye Mr Levy and I called it from the start mind you anyone could see it with the slightest knowledge off our owners. Unlike most fans I don’t blame Mourinho for the failings of this season gone bye. Mourinho actually said he didn’t want to sign Steven Bergwin, what about Bale signing highly unlikely his call either considering bale’s complete non existence in tracking back when out of possession something Jose teams are famed for. So Levy sacks him days before a cup final to save a few pound sterling in his contract in case he may have won a cup. Common denominator in all this £££££££££££. So our next chapter off cock ups continues but be sure off one thing the next manager hired will have feck all money to spend, no Kane, and mediocre squad of players but you have to get us to the promised land which for Enic is champions league football not winning titles . 2 chances Danny boy little and known spring to mind. Pack your bags Enic.

  • El Jefe says:

Pauric (Hi – been a while since we last exchanged) – I’ve got all kinds of respect for Poch and only begrudgingly accepted his departure because of the situation we were in at the time and I completely agree about JM also (indeed just like with now and any new manager – I will argue again that the guy needs to be backed as best possible otherwise no point) – but what I meant earlier was that both had multi million £ contracts and then needed/need to be parachuted down until we were/are completely free of their constraints – not at all what was/is needed when we are constrained by the new stadium debt, etc and furthermore by the Pandemic on top, etc and in desperate need for a squad overhaul above everything (assuming any kind of respect is shown as regards us being a FOOTBALL club and that success on the field leads to success off it, etc – especially if you want to run it as a business and not …. well ….. anything else lol)!

That’s already 1 reason why Ten Hag would be a very interesting proposition as I’m sure the guy could be got relatively cheaply – indeed on just £3m a season I reckon that will be a significant improvement on his current Ajax deal – compare that to Poch on £8.5m, JM on £13-15m and Conte apparently upto £17m!!!!!

The money saved here could be pumped into player recruitment and I’ll add his record at Ajax is top class – why not give the guy a go if he can be got (and from Ajax anyone can usually be got – indeed they regularly admit it themselves) – playing style tick, winning track record tick, cost/effectiveness tick, etc, etc, etc!

As for the rest – I’m relatively happy with all my player recruitment (sales and buys) suggestions – indeed all I think are attainable even Jesus given he wants regular action and only has 2 yr’s left on his contract and if everything falls into place – not only could he be got but I doubt his wages would even be that ridiculous either, etc!

P.S. Don’t smoke – ANYTHING – LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL – keep well mate all the same!

  • El Jefe says:

ND – cheers m8 – good to hear from you again for sure – indeed hope you’re keeping well, etc!

2 years ago now nearly – HT lambasted me on here for suggesting the sale of many especially for including Dier and Winksy in my “DEAD” list LOL – BUT ………………………….

Dier – like to see him as a RCB and not a LCB for a change although he can cover there just as can cover at DMC – good squad player for me at a minimum and worth keeping especially as there are plenty of others who have to go 1st and can easily help raise good funds between those already!

Same goes for Winksy and he’s actually a proper HG which is a great bonus, he also has great passing ability and vision, can easily run with it and at distance and has a good tenacity, etc about him as well – think he’s actually a very good footballer – but he needs protecting by say a Hoj (not to mention a decent back 4 behind him indeed) and also to play more regularly to fully harness his talent/ability – easily again a solid squad player and perfect foil for N’Dom for me – in fact with a more robust defensive aspect to his game – whereas N’Dom always looking to use his brilliant technique to push forwards, attack and create – which is great going 5 even 7 with the FB’s on attack but leaves you really exposed and it’s basically suicidal when you don’t have top class CB’s and on top no pace either (apart from Davy/Tanganga in terms of pace – but neither is even 1st choice currently – let alone after this summer and what’s coming in terms of recruitment hopefully)!

So just like above with Dier, plenty of others ahead of Winksy for the chop for now ……………………..!

  • El Jefe says:

Lunchtime fast approaching at last LOL – time for a nice Sunday roast – will likely be back tonight for a sweep though of the comments since ………… lol!

Great chatting again fellas and looking forward to a good, solid appointment this week already manager wise – like I say – Ten Hag for me for all sorts of reasons now I’ve looked into a bit and done some reading, searching, etc!

Otherwise, still say Scotty Parker could be a decent foil if all else fails ………..!

Take it from here basically and as it comes ………………..!

As for the Euros – 3 hopefuls – Spain, Portugal, England (Dad, Mum and born and bred in London) – 3 good solid pops at the cherry – barring the bloody usual French and Germans and at a stretch the Italians ………….!

  • TK says:

Just a quick comment on Gabriel Jesus.

When he is selected and brought onto the pitch for the Brazilian national team, my heart sinks. He looks good on occasion, but he’s not my first selection.

  • TK says:

I’d give our manager’s job to the tea lady instead of seeing this saga drag on for much longer.

We usually interpret DL’s habitual dragging out of all signings as being caused by his parsimonious attitude about spending money and his trying to squeeze out a few more pence, but it’s beginning to look like his neuroses are more profound than that.

I imagine that on his honeymoon he kept the bride out of bed for a few days before the got around to the act of consummation. Stick it in there, lad. Get on with it.

  • Niall D says:

EJ trust alls’OK your end, looks like it ;-), I was much the same as you re Winks, Dier, however I have now seen Dier in his “chosen” position and (for me) he has come up wanting, every game he has a mistake in him, Winksy again is uninspiring (for me) it’s easy to have a good pass ratio if your passes are only a metre sideways and backwards, when defending he is often out muscled and gives away free kicks in dangerous areas, when he tries “the long ball” it often goes astray, and don’t strat me on his shooting, as I remember his last shot hit the corner flag, the one before that is still rising. So for me both need to go.
    TK,
I’m in the same boat re GJ, is he a very good player, or a decent player in a very good team?

  • Geofspurs says:

TK …. That’s two of us backing the tea lady. Now if we can get a few more onside ….. ?! : – )

  • TK says:

    Niall,

If somehow Gabriel Jesus comes to us, my suspicion is that in the end we will not be all that happy. Hope he doesn’t come here, but if he does, I hope I turn out to be quite wrong. LOL.

  • TK says:

    Geof,

A few more onside for our offside suggestion?

  • TK says:

How did he manage to get five goals in one match? I kept waiting for the offside flag to be raised.

  • wentworth says:

Just a quick reference back to El Jefe (12.24 am).Not sure about hanging on to Doherty, Davies, Winka, Lo Celso and Bergweijn. They are all very average and no where near good enough. We have to aim so much higher.

Sadly, we missed out on Grealish because Levy thought he could get away offering peanuts.Just imagine him pulling the strings behind Son and Kane with a rejuvenated Dele ghosting in picking up the scraps. As it is, we ended up with Lo Celso….hmmmm.

Also, why do we never have any top young stars like Foden, Belllngham, Saka etc who can walk into the first team and become seasoned internationals in such a short time. It was not so long ago, we had 5 England Internationals. We are now down to one (temporarily).

Well, the new coach/manager has a massive job with limited funds, few rising stars and a lot of bench warmers to get rid of and an uncompromising, control freak as Chairman. Happy times.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

WW….there was talk of Manu offering £25m for Winks a few days ago, not sure why we haven’t snapped their hand off!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It’s a mess, there is no getting away from it. Tomorrow will be our 50th day without a manager I believe and the transfer window opens officially in a few days, it would appear our first signing is going to be Paratici, lets hope he has paranormal powers.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Another laborious performance from England, Henderson was way off the pace and made a fool of himself snatching the ball for the penalty that he then missed. Big mistake by Southgate including him when he clearly isn’t fit and is possibly past his best anyway. I think it’s also a mistake not taking Ollie Watkins, he would be a good addition to our squad if we lose Kane.

  • Niall D says:

Re my issues with Winks, just look at Ward Prowse’s performance today for England, even tho it was only a friendly, when, when has Winks ever given a performance, like that Co nsidering he plays the same position. Awnser NEVER.
That’s why I want rid, he needs to have a performance like that in his locker, but he doesn’t, Ward Prowse has 11 goals this season, I’d argue that Winks doesn’t have that in his whole career.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Exactly Niall…………and to think Ward-Prowse has been dropped from the England squad in favour of Henderson. Big mistake in my opinion, too much sentimentality on Southgate’s part.
