Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

I heard that Fonseca likes to play pragmatic boring football like Mourinho so it doesn’t seem there was much point in trading places.

  • TK says:

Paul O’Fonseca. Sounds Irish to me.

  • Geofspurs says:

ND/TQ …. Both os those songs brought back some memories. : – )

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Dumb and dumber. Levy seems to have done the impossible and appointed a director of football who is even more clueless than he is. Fonseca likes to play attacking football but his teams have a soft centre and tend to crumble when the going gets tough – evidence the second half of the Europa League semi-final v Man Utd. Roma also had a poor record against the top teams.
We will not finish in the top half of the table with this guy. We will be so easy to ply against – lads it’s Tottenham.
Not that Levy cares, he won’t ask for much money to spend and the season ticket renewals are in. If anyone is left in any doubt that Conte was just a front to boost season ticket sales then this proves it. A complete lack of ambition has been shown yet again. Shame on you Daniel Levy you disgraceful fraud.

Its a funny thing with the comments on managers. While the “Mourinho out” diatribe was on it was argued that literally anyone would be better. Now that bluff has been called and the criticism of any and all candidates has started. Jose was the last available option with a real track record, now anyone is a gamble and we just have to pick one and hope. The one constant seems to be that only foreigners need apply. I was disappointed when Lampard lost his job as he was the only English manager at a top club. Since anyone is a gamble I would rather gamble on someone home grown.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Sad reflection on English football jod, very few English players would make the top 50 world players and I guess no English managers would make the top 20.

  • jod says:

TQ2Spurs – Based on what exactly ? Since English managers don’t get jobs with top clubs how do they win the major trophies ? How many English managers have been in a realistic position to win the premier league or champions league, how many have even had the chance to fail ?

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Wow……just for once I was generally agreeing with you in a way but you still manage to turn it on its head!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Every report you read seems to give a different view on how Fonseca likes to set up his teams. Totally underwhelming appointment if it happens but would welcome being proved wrong.

  • Niall D says:

TQ what I will say about top players, from what I’ve seen, they don’t always make top managers.
Perhaps they can’t get across to the less gifted, what comes naturally to them.
I would argue that some of our greatest /Successful managers were not top players, Ferguson, Mouinho, Paisley.
We’re Pele, Best, even Maradona great managers, no.
Bobby Charlton couldn’t manage but was a great player, Jack whilst not as talented was a successful Manager.
I don’t know what the mix is to get a good manager, or a good fit for a team, but what ever it is I hope we get it soon.

  • BelgianSpur says:

jod – hard to argue in favour of Lampard when Tuchel took over the exact same squad and managed to get way more out of the group.

I am not saying all English managers are rubbish but they are getting chances to prove their worth and are just not taking them.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Morning Niall, of course some of those you mention that have been successful aren’t English and you are correct, a top player doesn’t automatically become a top or even half decent manager which has a different skill set.

Looking at English managers specifically even the likes of Clough were never tested in other leagues so for me the only truly great English manager until now has been Bobby Robson. Jod questions why homegrown aren’t given an opportunity with top clubs, the simple answer is they are not seen as good enough as was demonstrated by Lampard’s sentimental appointment at Chelsea on the basis of a degree of success in the Championship.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Niall – there are always 2 ways to look at a track record.

You choose the “glass half empty” when it comes to Martinez, saying he has no track record in the PL, save for an FA Cup win.

Another way to look at it is that he guided Everton to 5th (above us and Man U) in his first season there, and got them playing well in Europe. That is better than anyone not named Moyes in the last 20+ years at Everton (incuding the likes of Carlo Ancellotti), and better than anyone not named Pochettino or Redknapp at Spurs in the last 20 years.

As you said yourself, he did win an FA Cup, which is better than 95% of managers out there, and 99% of people we are being linked to. With Wigan, no less – far more impressive than someone winning it with a big club.

As for Belgium, they made it to the semis of the last world cup and lost to France, the best team in the tournament and clear favourites in 2021 again, en route to a 3rd place finish.

They lost one game all tournament, on a header from a corner (Umtiti beat… Fellaini to a header, of all people). It’s not like they were tactically outclassed or dismantled by Deschamps.

I struggle to see how this is under achieving, considering Belgium is a country with less than half of the population of London alone. Under achieving would be being knocked out in the group stages, like then title-holders Germany were.

You may dislike him, but he’s better suited for the role than anyone not named Conte, based on his “underwhelming” (in your eyes) CV.

I think you probably need to lower your expectations if that “underwhelming” candidate isn’t good enough for you, because whoever we are likely to get is probably going to have achieved a lot less….

I’m not saying he is the best manager in the world, I’m just saying he’s a far surer thing than the likes of Paulo Fonseca, to name someone.

  • jod says:

BelgianSpur – Good point but Lampard wasn’t in charge that long and Tuchel essentially continued developing the squad Lampard had built. So did Lampard fail or would he have done the same given more time ? We will never know. The interesting thing with Tuchel was he hadn’t really won anything before arriving at Chelsea, he has now. Nothing in Germany, only domestic trophies in France. For PSG and Bayern winning domestic titles is taken as read, its only news if one year they lose one like Pochettino has done. It was a good call from Chelsea but I wonder if an English manager would ever get the same chances ? I really don’t see how English managers are getting chances at the big time at all, foreign owners = foreign managers, its the cost of the premier league.

  • Niall D says:

    Bs
We all have our likes and dislikes in managers, just like you I’m entitled to my opinion.
As I said with that group of players, who were in and around no1 in the world at the time, he won nothing, regardless of being out played or not, I’m not arguing about the size of the population, regardless of this, the 11 on the pitch at this era have been seen as the best team in the world.
What I’m saying, given that 11 any manager could bring success. But he didn’t
For me just like there were those who didn’t want Mourinho, I don’t want Martinez.
I have found his Premiership credentials (for me) less than inspiring.
My opinion, not a glass half empty, just don’t want the guy as our manager and I outlined why.
Your opinion may be different but what you say doesn’t and won’t convince me.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It seems many clubs are having difficulty appointing a manager, there must be a reason why this is the case all of a sudden, my guess would be the financial position at these clubs due to covid whereby they can’t offer transfer funds that are being demanded by the candidates. Just a few to mention where negotiations have broken down: Eddie Howe and Celtic, Conte and Spurs, NES and Palace, and Wagner and WBA.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

We’re a funny old lot, us Spurs supporters…

    “Get it done Levy!”

    “We need a manager, now!”

“As long as it’s not him or him or him or him or……………. ?”

Personally, I can’t see any reason to rush… There is not a team around to actually coach right now. And the TW has only just opened…

However, I expect a club announcement very soon. And our new boss will be revealed.

But whomever he is, will probably not be the right one for many of us. And that’ll be before we have even kicked off for the next season…

    ??? OUT!

  • Niall D says:

I’m with you on this HT.
Is there currently a rush to get anyone in, when a lot of our main players, are on international duty, what’s another fortnite.

  • 123spurs says:

He will either be in a job at Xmas or not. Very tough one to call. The players have they’re part to play aswell in how successful the season will be.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

I have to agree with Jod. There are some good English managers out there. I would have been very happy to go with Graham Potter who I think will end up being a top manager. With Kane, Winks and Dele likely to leave we will need to increase our home grown quota. Are Paratici and Fonseca the best men to do this. Are they the most likely people to be able to assess which potential signings will be suited to the premier league. With no money available unless we sell I do think Potter would have been a fine choice, but here we are. I guess we have to give the new manager a chance. COYS

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

As someone who said absolutely anyone would be better than Jose I am now obliged to say that Fonseca is a good appointment.
Fonseca, Fonseca, he came from Portugal, he hates the Arsenal. COYS
