Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

DH….from what I have been reading the new manager will be required to integrate some of the academy players into the squad which is how they may improve the homegrown quota.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

TQ2 Spurs – you are right Skipp, Sessegnon, Scarlett, Cirkin may all get their chance.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

DH….that’s what worries me to a degree, nice lads that they are I don’t think they are good enough to be in a starting eleven with ambitions to win titles or trophies. I’m not sure whether Skipp, or particularly Sessegnon, ever will be, it’s too early to say whether Scarlett or Cirkin will be.

Jod – Tuchel won the german cup with Dortmund and won the league twice in France. He had 3 times the track record of Frank Lampard.

He achieved more in 4 months, with a squad he didn’t pick, than Lampard did in 18 months with a squad he hand picked himself, and was heavily backed for.

The reason why Lampard lost his job was precisely because the team asn’t moving forward after 18 months and more than 250 million spent on players…

If this new geezer, the Fonz is appointed as our new coach, how long before Spurs Fans hang him out to dry?
because to me its started already, have a look at the negative posts already, he hasn’t been confirmed the coach, let alone sit down in his office chair yet.

It seems to me some even now want instant success, trophies etc, well take it from me, I believe that’s out the window for a while longer, a re-build is coming, though there is always BUT! lol! COYS

Niall – I’m not trying to change your opinion on Martinez. I personally question whether it is entirely fair, but you’re more entitled to think what you want. We can totally agree to disagree.

I was just saying that if you think Martinez’ record is dubious (which is fair enough in itself), I just wonder how you are going to look at the other candidates we have been reportedly linked to.

For instance, if you don’t rate Martinez for his underwhelming PL record, what would you say about someone like Graham Potter? (I’m not saying you have backed Graham Potter, by the way; I was just using Potter as an example of someone supposedly on our shortlist, who would have even less qualifications for the job, on paper).

As an aside, I can name lots of managers who are universally recognised as either having been, or being, top managers in their own right, yet who failed with a specific group of talented players.

It’s hard to knock Fabio Capello’s achievements as a manager. Yet he never won anything with England, at a time when England had loads of talent. Louis Van Gaal won leagues in Germany, Spain, Holland, the Champions League, yet only won an FA Cup with Man U in 3 years. Dare I say it… Mauricio Pochettino with PSG? The list goes on and on.

All managers the football world would have rated in their time, yet who suffer the perception of under achievement in a specific contenxt, given the talent at their disposal.

Is that perception really fair, and are said managers solely responsible for those teams’ under achievements? Food for thought.

  • BelgianSpur says:

PY – plenty of fans are very aware of the need for a rebuild.

This has nothing to do with expecting instant success, but it has everything to do with how much we trust someone like Paul Fonseca to oversee the rebuild successfully.

This being said, you make a fair point. If fans aren’t convinced of the qualifications of the new incoming manager, the leash will probably be shorter.

If someone like Conte had been named, the track record is there to show that if you back him, he will get results. If he was named manager and results didn’t come right away, fans would probably be more willing to trust the process.

This being said, the exact same argument could have been made about JM and we all know how that worked out.

  • jod says:

BelgianSpur – German Cup ? worth something I suppose but hardly a league title. The French trophies are worthless as I suspect you understand as well as me. If you win domestic titles with PSG or Bayern you are only doing what is expected from every manager, such is the resources gap to the rest of the league. Even the Spanish league is more competitive.

“a squad he didn’t pick”, interesting choice of words. You don’t win a champions league trophy with rubbish players so that means Lampard had put together a pretty good squad, Tuchel didn’t have to do that part of the job. Which brings us right back to the time question. You don’t put a squad together overnight, although your post implies that is what Frank did and then twiddled his thumbs for eighteen months.

  • Niall D says:

    BS,
You say Martinez led Everton to 5th position, for me, that was more to do with Moyes’legacy.
Whem Martinez finally got his own stratigies in place Everton only managed 12th or 13th.
Yetcagain with Wigan you see the guy who won the FA Cup I see the guy who got em relagated.
Presently I just think he is a manager who has a team which picks its self.
I think he is a bit nieve in his tactics.
However if he does become our manager I will give my support, I don’t detest the guy, I just have my reasons for not wanting him.

  • TK says:

Just read a report that Spurs are actively seeking to sell the contract of Winks. Seems a serious article–no Nods and Winks involved, other than the obvious one. They want 30k, but will accept a few bob.

  • TK says:

the man from Ajax back in the race? DL is addicted to indecision.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

What are you saying TK……that Winks is only worth a Tiddly amount? :- )

    • TK says:

No, TQ2, I’m saying that DL fancies himself a great negotiator, but he isn’t so great at it. If you make it clear that Winks isn’t wanted, you cheapen the price others are willing to pay.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Gawd…..I’m just watching the BBC Euros preview program, does anyone else find Micah Richards a bit too loud and in your face as a pundit?

  • Pauric says:

TQ2 Spurs, you say those young lads are nice lads but not for a team looking to win titles or cups. They should be perfect for our mid table club.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Pauric…..Skipp reminds me of Steve Perryman, a great servant of the club who played 23 times for Englands U23’s but only once for the full England squad.

  • Spurfect One says:

Spurs went full circle but even Spursed that up. Sacking Poch, only to try and get him back 18 months later. Not getting him then getting a coach who is probably our 5th choice, maybe Paraciti’s 2nd choice. The Poch sacking has had this ripple effect. It really serves Levy right for his insistence and stubborn behavior. Reports of most of the board wanting Nagelsman straight after Poch but Levy wanted Jose instead, then Levy misses out to him on Bayern further down the line. Getting Gedson instead of Bruno, missing out on grealish over a few million. Keep this snake and fraud away from footballing matters. One can only hope Paraciti gets full control.

  • Niall D says:

TQ I’m much with you there, I just don’t see him as a pundit, noticed it in the “top tens” with Linker and Shearer was out of his depth and often trying to talk about stuff he didn’t know.
Bring back Wrighty, even tho he’s a gooner at least he is off the pedigree of the other two and can present well.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Niall….have you listened to Agbonlahor on TalkSport? I thought Bent was poor at punditry until he came along! lol

  • Geofspurs says:

    TQ …. Loved your ‘Tiddly’ comment …. and TK’s serious replay! : – )

  • Niall D says:

No TQ havnt heard him the worst for me was monotone Michael Owen. . Its hard to beat JJ, Shearer, Wrighty, Keane, Dion, bit of life about em plus a bit of knowledge.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Niall….agree with your selection but do find Keane a bit too abrasive at times!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Looks like the clear out is under way. Foyth’s loan has been made permanent and Aurier is reported to have agreed personal terms to go back to PSG.
