Why Christian Eriksen won’t return to Tottenham this summer

|

I didn’t think it needed to be said, but Christian Eriksen will not be returning to Tottenham this summer. We only sold the wantaway 28-year-old to Inter Milan in January, so it makes little sense that he’d be open to a return so soon and that we’d even want him back after his inconsistent performances last season.

What’s being alleged?

Fabrizio Romano said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast that a source told him Tottenham were asking about Eriksen a couple of weeks ago. He added that Inter weren’t willing to let him leave, but it makes little sense why we’re trying to bring the Dane back to North London in the first place.

We’ve yet to replace Eriksen but have been linked with Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho, Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey, Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic, Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek, Everton’s James Rodriguez and AS Roma’s Nicolò Zaniolo this summer, so we’ve made a conscious effort to add more creativity to our midfield.

Would Eriksen leave Inter so soon?

The 27-year-old struggled in his debut season at the San Siro but reaffirmed his desire to stay in Italy, telling DR Sporten (h/t Football365): “I hope to return and that everyone starts from scratch, then we’ll have to see what the coach really thinks.”

Eriksen made 26 appearances in all competitions for Inter, scoring four goals with three assists. The Danish international only started 11 games across the board, however, and racked up just 60 minutes of football in the last four stages of the Europa League.

The Daily Mail say he’s been placed on the transfer list too, but it remains to be seen whether a suitor will match Inter’s asking price and Eriksen’s wages.

Summary

The ship has sailed for me. We have moved on from Eriksen and should turn our attentions elsewhere this summer. We were happy to let Eriksen go in January as his form was inconsistent, so why would we re-sign him after he’s underperformed in Italy? It makes little sense.

We don’t have the budget for a big-money buy, but there is value in the market. The transfer window doesn’t shut until October, so we have a few more weeks to try and bring in a creative midfielder. Alternatively, if Dele Alli can turn his form around, we may not need one.

What a pointless article! Eriksen left because he wanted a different challenge, and stated this on a number of occasions when asked – just because he is not wanted by Conti now at Inter doesn’t mean he wants to comeback – what part of different challenge don’t you get?
