Tottenham should sign bargain 28 y/o “God-send” once compared to Maradona – Opinion

As Tottenham Hotspur potentially scour the market for any fruitful additions in preparation for Jose Mourinho’s first full season in charge, one player that could prove to be a worthy consideration is out-of-favour Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez – who’s contract expires in 2021.

Having been linked with a swoop for the attacking-midfield star in recent months, an early April report from Canal RCN claimed he could be a viable replacement for ex-Spur Christian Eriksen, so perhaps it’s time manager Mourinho seriously considers a move for the Colombian – especially given the fact he has been unsettled at the Bernabeu in the past.

Over the last two seasons, Rodriguez has failed to establish himself around the Galacticos’ future plans, going out on a two-year loan spell to Bayern Munich which ended just before the start of 2019/2020 – having scored 15 goals and assists 20 others during his time in Germany.

Should Spurs swoop for Rodriguez?

Do it now

No, not worth it

Now, starting a meagre four La Liga matches under Zinedine Zidane this campaign, it’s not inconceivable to imagine that Rodriguez could be looking for a way out of his current arrangement.

Taking this into account, Real could be looking to profit as much as possible from the 28-year-old’s would-be departure, especially considering his current deal expires next year.

Enter Spurs, who may want to entertain the possibility of signing a player who is proven on the biggest stage – with Uruguay international coach Oscar Tabarez heaping praise on Rodriguez in the past and mentioning him alongside the likes of Diego Maradona, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

As well as this, Ex-Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes described the midfielder as a ‘God-send‘ during his spell in Bavaria – potentially outlining the fact he would be a superb addition for Spurs.

Currently valued at £28 million by Transfermarkt, even though the recent pandemic has forced clubs to re-consider spending money, Rodriguez may be a bargain for that price.
