Team news: Tottenham outcast is ineligible for Borussia Dortmund clash

|

Tottenham confirm Vincent Janssen is ineligible for Wednesday night’s Champions League meeting with Borussia Dortmund. The 24-year-old wasn’t named in the squad as he had a serious foot injury and didn’t have a shirt number assigned earlier in the season, but Mauricio Pochettino has said Harry Kane’s injury could see the Dutchman return to the first-team. It just won’t be in Europe.

Against Dortmund, Heung-min Son is expected to lead the line. Fernando Llorente will certainly make the 18-man squad, but it’s unknown if he’ll be handed a start in the Londoners’ most important game of the season. Llorente has enjoyed a successful renaissance after spending the first-half of the campaign on the periphery, but Pochettino might want a pacier alternative.

Janssen is used to being left out of matchday squads. He’s yet to make a single first-team appearance this season and has instead only featured for the reserves. The striker has made 39 appearances in all competitions for Spurs since his 2016-move from AZ Alkmaar.

After a disappointing debut season, he was loaned out to Fenerbahce in his second campaign at the club and has an uncertain future. Pochettino didn’t want him for Tottenham’s European excursions, so fans won’t see Janssen in the squad against Dortmund.
