Tottenham defender was ‘never told anything’ about interest from Leeds United

|

Juan Foyth says he was “never told anything” about Leeds United’s interest last summer. The Tottenham defender was linked with a move to the Championship promotion chasers when he was an unknown player on the periphery. No deal materialised, however, and he was handed a surprise run of games in November and December when Spurs suffered an injury crisis at the back. Foyth has made a total of 17 appearances in all competitions.

He told Fooball.London that he doesn’t recall Leeds’ interest and paid little attention to speculation. Vital Spurs has suggested he could be open to a temporary move away if he remains behind the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez, but his latest comments suggest he’s more focused on fighting for first-team football at Tottenham.

“I was never told anything about that so I don’t know whether it was actually true or not. I have to guide myself on what my agent says. Despite everything I started the season really wanting and looking forward to being here, despite not having a position (in the Champions League squad) and I just wanted to learn day by day.”

Foyth hasn’t featured in the Premier League since facing Bournemouth on December 26, but he has been used in the FA Cup – playing against Tranmere Rovers in the third round and Crystal Palace in the fourth round. The 21-year-old has three-and-a-half years left on his deal with Spurs and will hope he still has more opportunities before this season comes to a close. Time will tell.
