Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

Davies for sale? Off to Spain or Italy? Sergei Rebrov coming to Spurs? Just joshing on the last one. Really it’s Helder Postiga.

Being the Euros and all, I remembered Postiga’s cheeky cheeky penalty vs England in 2004. Ex Spur and all. He stank the joint for Spurs but knocked England out with one of the shootout penalties vs England. Really and cheeky effort. Saco de aรงo. Cajones de acero.

Some fickle fans, on the decline yet he is top goalscorer and assists.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

You would think we had smashed the Czech’s looking at today’s back pages. The cross for the the goal was just about the the only contribution Grealish made to the game and likewise with Sterling who scored it. I think Harry’s one on target shot on goal was the only other one we had in the game from memory. I feel the next game will show how poor we are.

Another big problem about Spurs is the way we sign players with huge potential ( Sessegnon, Jack Clarke, Bergweijn, Lo Celso, Doherty, Aurier, Vinicius) who suddenly become very average. All these played really well for previous clubs and either can’t get a game with us or turn out to be bench warmers. What do we do wrong?

Where are our young stars like Bellingham, Sancho, Saka when we have outstanding facilities? What are we doing wrong?

Why do we not spot rising talent, giving them encouragement and opportunity to shine?

Why can we not attract a top coach?

    See above.

WW 100% re these players, or, we have them and they go somewhere else and smash it, Walker Peters, Froyth, Sess, Skipp, Paulinho, Tripps. All improved since leaving us. I dunno the answer, we’re back to the gipsy Curse again.

Wentworth, unfortunately with less than two weeks until pre-season it now looks as though our new manager will be a cheap, who is available option rather than the right man for the job. I have heard mentions of Graham Potter in the last day or to which I think would be an excellent choice but he has a contract until 2025 and he seems to me far too sensible to join Spurs. This is of course our other problem, Levy and Paratici have been exposed as incompetents who really don’t know what they are doing, lurching from one manager to another, lurching from one type of manager to another.
What right minded ambitious manager will risk his reputation by coming to the circus that is Tottenham Hotspur.

  • TK says:

HK10 just had a peak year. But after a peak is the decline towards the valley. I say this only because he looks totally knackered at the end of the season and his ankles have become a perennial problem. This is a couple of years where the knackered and knocked have been so glaring. If he’s to be sold, it’s best done before he’s obviously in his decline.

I’m not sure it that opinion is what came across as fickle. He obviously just led the league in goals and assists. That’s peak performance. But, to me, he seems knackered and knocked about. And there’s not much time until the training camp opens for him to recharge the batteries.

The question isn’t whether he’s going to go fairly soon into some decline, but when and how rapidly.

If he stays he surely needs far greater protection than he’s been getting. He’s being burned out by our managers.

    DH,

The clown car is filled with potential managers wearing clown shoes jumping out and running about until the car falls off some cliff to be replaced by the next clown car. We’ll have a new manger sometime around December. Until then, it’s all hands on deck. The freighter carrying the clown cars is sinking.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

TK – will the new manager we appoint in December replace the manager who we sack in November after a disasterous start to the season

    Fickle football supporters, never, ๐Ÿ˜‰
However re my own Kane comments, I personally think at times, Kane does look tired and sluggish, almost every season around February or March and that’s when he gets injured, it has happened routinely over the last 3 seasons, he does have an issue with ankle injuries.
I feel at present that if he wishes to leave Spurs now whilst he is at the top of his game, so be it.
I say he is on the cusp, he may stay at this level for two more seasons, or another bad ankle twist could see his career go downward quicker, he doesn’t get rested currently and has arguably played many more competitive matches than any of his contemporaries this season, (I would argue around 10)he looks off the pace ,similair to the 2018 world Cup year, and look what that did to our squad.
I would be delighted if he “chose” to stay however if he is of a mind to go I wouldn’t argue against as he is just at his peak value around now, and the money could be used to rebuild the team.
There is little sense in retaining a player who is tired, can’t be rested and who’s heart may not be in it.
Fickle or not just my thoughts on the Kane issue.

  • wentworth says:

Doncaster… I too like Potter. He has done an excellent job in Brighton with limited resources. They were very unlucky with some results and lacked a top striker.
He is English so can speak well!! He is modest but ambitious. He might bring Lamptey with him to cover our right wing back spot.
To be honest, there is no one else left unless Poch can be prized away.
Levy and Co have made us the laughing stock with their inept approach.
Did you see how well Modric controlled the game last night. Sadly we lost him and Eriksen and have gone rapidly downhill since they departed. Most teams have a playmaker who can score
    We have nothing.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It has been reported that Poch is still looking for a way out of PSG this summer so it could be as I said earlier, Levy is hedging his bets in the hope that things develop in Paris.

  • 123spurs says:

Why can’t HK peak again this year, he may or may not get as many goals or assists but we may also finish higher.

  • wentworth says:

123…. maybe Harry could slot into our midfield position. He is by far our best attacking midfielder with his range of passing, two good feet, long range shots, free kicks, tackling etc.

  • 123spurs says:

Exactly WW, and a top striker up top.

  • TK says:

    ww,

I doubt HK10 would want to switch to midfield. His heart is set on setting career goal records.

The point I meant to make earlier was not that I wanted to sell his contract, but that if he is to be sold, it might be better to do now than in the future when his value is dropping. He ought to be at peak value now, and with his being knacker the last couple of years at the end matches of the season and with his dodgy ankles, he might be peaking and poised to decline soon. I write this with the supposition that he won’t stay for too much longer no matter what else happens. If he’s going, go now, not in a year or two when his sale value will be far lower because his talents are visibly eroding.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

If he doesn’t show some better form at the Euros his value might start falling quicker than we think.

  • Niall D says:

There are those here who only read what they want to read, not actually what has been written.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    He’s one of our own
    He’s one of our own
Harry Kaaane, he’s one of our own…

If I was saying one week “Keep Kane”, and in the next week “Kane out”. And then if i continue with; “Kane in, out, in, out”. Then that would be fickle of me… But I’ve not been doing this. He has always had my full support, and from day one. From when he wasn’t even a first choice player and the likes of Ade and Soldado were keeping him on the bench.

But, if Kane wants out anyway, it makes no difference what any of us think or say. And then if he does leave, I’ll not be celebrating the fact, but I will wish him well. And I will relish a new Kane-less era at the club. A fresh-look Tottenham.

My feeling is that he does want out. And if this is so, then I think Spurs will possibly be better off without him. The team needs new talent. Fresh blood. 1 or 2 or more top players that can make a team shine. Players that may not come cheap. Either to buy or pay a wage to. Or of course both. The only way I can see Spurs affording such players right now, is to sell Harry Kane. And, just to make it even more controversial… Sell Son too.

I honestly believe that the team can benefit from this. It seems odd, I know. But think about it. In a season in which Kane has won the PL Golden Boot and also finished as top goal assister. And in which both Son and Bale had contributed their fair share too, Spurs still only finished the season in their lowest PL position for a good few years. Certainly since both Kane and Son had first ever played for Spurs.

We have also reached cup finals and lost with all 3 at some point. They haven’t managed to pull it off for us when it counts. Not like a Messi or Ronaldo can and have done. (Or as Bale has with Real). Or any other player that has won plenty as an individual and for their clubs. Why? Because the team has not played a good enough supporting role for them. And, because Kane and Son really aren’t in the same league as Messi and Ronaldo. Or even Bale! They just aren’t. And Spurs haven’t been, and still aren’t the top club that Real, Barca, City and United are and have been. So, let’s not delude ourselves here.

Spurs just finished the season in 7th place in the PL, even with all those goals and assists from 3 great players. Bale, Son and Kane. And yet Chelsea finished 4th in the PL and winners of the CL, without one single outstanding goal scorer at the club. Not one! What does this tell us? Or at least, suggest to us?

    I’ll leave it there… As, I don’t have the answers. I’m just thinking out aloud here… ๐Ÿ™‚

The obvious argument against these words, is of course, that we would’ve been even worse off without them… Maybe. Probably!

Let’s wait and see… Harry is not forever! But Spurs will still march on, with or without Mr. Kane and his G B’s. With or without Son’s smiling face. With or without GB (Bale) and his golden balls!

Hey, doesn’t the stadiums iconic golden Cockerel sit atop a golden football?! All proud n shiny… I think it does. And just as that fool Gazza failed to shoot it down, the cockerel will carry on shining long after Kane has lost all his sparkle and way beyond when the Son stops shining.

Here’s to Bale, Son, Kane. And to all Spurs players, for all time… Here’s to a once glorious past. And here’s to a bright new future for THFC.

    Up the Spurs!

  • Niall D says:

More or less my thoughts on HK, I wouldn’t want a “Moderic” scenario again at Spurs, though I don’t think Harry has that persona, it’s just if he wants to go and his head has been turned, perhaps now is the best time for all parties.
It would give us a finincial platform to bring in several “very good” players to help rebuild the team.
