Match Thread – Spurs Seeking Wings As We Leipzig Back Into Champions League Action

|

With Tottenham Hotspur lifting themselves back into the mandatory European places with victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, it did mark our fourth match unbeaten in the top flight, along with three wins on the spin and although Chairman Daniel Levy (and many fans) will breathe a sigh of relief at Europa League football given where we were only a few weeks ago, from a financial point of view it will still be a massive hit to take compared to Champions League revenue.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

But on the topic of the Champions League, this midweek sees us back in action in the Round of 16 and we welcome RB Leipzig to White Hart Lane and given the earlier rumour mill speculation linking us and manager Jose Mourinho with an interest in Dayot Upamecano, we can certainly expect to see his name on the newsfeeds again this week.

For most fans, they will also be paying him slightly more attention just in case the rumours about the French Under 21 international are true.

As for us and this game though, we will just be hoping to keep our more recent run of form going and pick up another victory with further performance improvements to help keep lifting the spirits.

All eyes to 8pm and fingers crossed.

RB Leipzig...

I love the way Niall has renamed Davinson as “Dave”
Formation will be interesting given the injuries and whether Parrott is given any game time also.

I think he might go with an “unspursy ” front 3, maybe Lamela, Bergwyn and Moura,

    Something like this maybe:
    Sergio, Tobias, Dave, Benjamin
    John, Trevor, Henry
    Dale, Stevie, Luke

Terry Parrot to come in the second half and finish them off!

Love the name that team, some good sides and opinions for tonight, just shows without Our Arry n Son the very many alternatives we have and how now Jose has to earn his dosh.

As has been said Jose will know what he/we are/is up against and how to start with a quick, for us anyway, change to another plan.

I still believe we have enough to win tonight, hopefully without conceding for them that lucrative away goal. COYS

  • jod says:

You can name any line up you like. The fact remains none of those players are going to score goals at the rate Kane and Son score. Over the remainder of the season that is inevitably going to cost us points. Going into tonight’s game you are hoping someone plays a blinder and the defence holds up.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    Let us pray.

Well I’ll give anything a go if it helps! lol

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Oh come on Danny…….what on earth is happening to fix this issue?

We are down to about 10 diehard regular posters now, if this continues much longer the debate section is going to die a sad death!

    • Hot Tottingham says:

To be honest TQ2 I have thought for a while now that that is the aim on VS. I think they want to gear us posters and future posters onto the VS Forum.

I can’t see any good and logical reason for this problem going on so long without any official apology and explanation for it. It makes no sense…

If only we were updated by those that run Vital (not Danny who seems to have no informed clues); then I wouldn’t have to be making up such speculative conspiracy theories.

As it stands, I am very close to not posting any longer. It has become a joke. I’m seeing replies to a comment left early in the day after I am posting later in the day without knowing what has since been said by others… It’s bloody frustrating and very annoying.

And if anyone wants to reply to this, it could be 4 hours before I know it… 2 hours for this to appear followed by a further two hours for the reply to show up… It’s a joke! But not that funny…

      • Danny Winter says:

I’ve got no update to give folks – hence the lack of one – and not really been around this week either in case I’d missed any other comments/questions?

The spam function had a field day today for some reason, so I’ve just approved a raft manually, so they should be showing now.

Don’t see it’s any kind of ruse to move people to the forum from the front end to be honest, that wouldn’t make sense. But there has been something going on in the background as we now have quizzes – but again, I haven’t yet got a specific update on the comments issues.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

To be fair jod, you don’t that for sure. But if that is how it pans out, the bottom line is that we still just need to outscore the other lot by at least 1 goal. I don’t think that’s at all unlikely. All of our attacking players are quite capable of scoring and creating goals. So even if one doesn’t rise above the rest, the rest may well be sharing the responsibility and do exactly what’s required without the need for any one individual and their tally being our main source of goals.

With a set-up that doesn’t involve Kane or Son, then the onus and focus is now on others to step up and into their shoes. Just as Son has stepped up and into Harry’s on more than one occasion. And, I believe that there is more than one player that could do this. It doesn’t matter though, if it is Dele scoring all of the goals or, if it’s Toby that is sharing the burden…

Without Harry, we set up differently. And now without Son we may well have to set up differently again. It could even work out to our advantage.

Besides which, us supporters naming starting eleven’s is just a bit of fun, isn’t it. A game to play.

  • PompeyYid says:

HT…just read your reply to jods, in my mind negative, post, am just going to say “you took the words right out of my mouth” lol!

The game of football is about scoring at the very least 1 more goal than your opponents thus = 3pts.

As has been said we have the players to do that, so I am not that down hearted, yes we will miss Our Arry and Son, that’s playing one way, so we have to adapt and play another way, ie plan X or Z, simple.

Am looking forward to tonight, exciting stuff. COYS

  • El Jefe says:

    Lloris

    Aurier Toby Davy Davies

    Winks N’Dombele

    Lo Celso Dele Bergwijn

    Moura

Gazza, Verts, Tanganga, Sessegnon, Dier, Fernandes, Lamela

We’re very weakened without HK10, Sonny and even Sissoko so anything good coming of this season for me now will be a massive bonus – I had started believing again with City’s punishment and 5th being good enough for CL next season and also in how we cut Chelski down to a 1 point lead only leading upto our crunch challenge with them but now without the aforementioned think we could struggle to find goals – that said I can certainly see merit in HT’s argument and the likes of Dele, Moura and even Bergwijn, Lo Celso have decent scoring records amongst themselves so if we could keep crucial clean sheets in most matches anything could still be possible especially if we started nicking games 1-0 but on recent results/performances – we’ve relied heavily on HK10 and Sonny this season (as we do every season given they are undoubtedly world class) and also we’ve barely kept any clean sheets so does not bode very well when all is said and done.

Still looking forward to tonight and Saturday and so on – whilst we’re in the race we’ve always still got a chance so let’s wait and see what happens – not expecting much but could be pleasantly surprised.

  • Allan says:

In the last 3 games it has been sufficient to outscore the opposition and I hope it will continue this evening .
However as this is a 2 leg tie it will be important vs Leipiz to gain a hoped for at least 2 goal advantage ?
With Ali ,Lucas , and Bergwijn playing up front and lo Celso pulling the strings with Ndombele ( fit ? ) hopefully giving some control to midfield we have a hope of scoring goals .
In defence I fear for Aurier since he will be targeted by their fast runners and feel that he could again become a liability putting a srain on the centre backs ?
However if Tangy doesn’t play we don’t have much of a choice !!
I loved Jose’s comment saying he had no strikers on the bench then saying he now doesn’t have any on the pitch !!!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Good to see FIFA are proposing to change the offside law to ‘clear daylight’ principal as many of us one here have suggested in the past.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Sorry all for this reminder:

Earlier in this competition we were thrashed at home by Bayern, 2-7. Both Son and Kane played that night. Hugo was in goal etc… But, there was just one of our new players that started and no others in the squad. Tanganga was also out of the picture.

Of course Poch was still the boss and Jose wasn’t even on most of our minds to take over… Things have changed a lot since then. The key thing being our consistency and improved results. However we may have got them. We have a lot of new guys involved and most of them have looked good. And Jose is just the sort of coach to get us through it all without our two main goal scorers.

It’s not all about Kane and Son scoring or not scoring goals anyway. It’s about the team. And our remaining players can make a good enough team to cope and pull through without those two in it… Honest!

    And tonights team is:
#THFC: Lloris (C), Aurier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies, Winks, Gedson, Lo Celso, Dele, Bergwijn, Lucas.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Subs:
Gazza Jan Tanganga Dier Skipp Ndombele Lamela.

  • Danny Winter says:

Lookman (ex Everton) and Olmo on the bench – linked with the latter quite regularly last summer from memory?

  • El Jefe says:

See I got the team almost right – Fernandes instead of N’Dombele – shame about N’Dombele but Fernandes has been impressive when coming on since arriving and deserves a shot especially if Tanguy is still not upto it from the start. Hoping for some kind of win end of!

  • El Jefe says:

TQ – will make games a lot more interesting with more goals, etc but for us we need all the help we can get at the back including our best defender VAR LOL – hopefully by next season we’ll have made some moves in the summer market and brought in atleast a RB and a LCB maybe even 2 CB’s if Verts leaves.

  • El Jefe says:

I see problems are still persisting with the site and delayed publication of posts – it’s been some 3 months now since the issues started – ridiculous and as other’s have said is killing the debate on here – it’s about time it got fixed LOL!

  • 123spurs says:

Why do we always do this to ourselves.

  • 123spurs says:

I’ve seen note clean sheet s in a 2 star hotel.

  • wentworth says:

Outplayed and outclassed. Well beaten by the best team. We seem to be a newish team of quite good players. Sadly missing someone up front. 5 years and we still have not bought a decent back up for Kane.Dele looks a bit miffed. I think he might be off soon.

  • Spurfect One says:

Jose’s style is wearing on me already. I don’t get why Tanganga wasn’t played at RB to deal with the constant threat of Werner. I also think Ndombele is much better played in a deeper role where he can pick the ball up and gain control of MF, why the hell is Gedson playing in front of him? Jose likes these steady eddie players for a pragmatic system, players like Davies and Dier completely stiffling our creativity.

I looked at the way Leipzig play and it reminded me of us under Poch in his pomp. Naggelsman plays the way i prefer, i don’t care how successful Jose has been. The difference in coaching is clear to see.
