“Wasn’t Given…A Chance” – Recent Spurs Departure Expected A Different Future

|

With Danny Rose’s late January transfer window switch out to Newcastle United from Tottenham Hotspur, plenty of fans are certainly mixed about the departure with some looking back to the left back’s better days at the club and others more focused on his more outspoken thoughts.

Having explained in the latter end of 2019 about how the club were trying to move him on and addressed all the summer speculation, as well as saying he would see out his contract at the club regardless, a number of fans questioned his commitment and for a lot of people it explained his lack of game time under manager Jose Mourinho – and that was even before we saw talk of a potential fallout.

Irrespective, his late move to Newcastle appeared to bring all that speculation and nonsense to an end, but over the weekend Rose again had his say.

Speaking to the BBC, the 29-year-old England man blamed Mourinho for a lack of chances and unfortunately seemed oblivious to how he may have helped create the situation.

“I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline. I did want to play for him. I knew after a month (Mourinho’s arrival) I was never going to play. It was difficult going out to train knowing I wasn’t going to play. It’s not worked out, but full respect to him and what he’s doing at the club. He took over with the club 12 points adrift of Chelsea and now it’s four. I have to be honest, I thought I would continue playing.”

Whether it’s right or wrong in the modern game, money rules, and once Rose admitted his standpoint he closed the door on himself in many ways, especially in light of his form as the club will naturally look to the future.

It’s another sour experience for fans and although he’s completely contrite in the remainder of the interview about his form and his struggles since returning from injury, many will focus purely in on his belief he’d continue to play regardless of what was going on elsewhere.

Given his service, you have to wish him well though – this happens in the game and given everything that has gone on, credit to him for accepting the move to try and get himself back on track as he could’ve just sat on his contract – as he once claimed.
