Match Thread – Spurs Seeking Wings As We Leipzig Back Into Champions League Action

|

With Tottenham Hotspur lifting themselves back into the mandatory European places with victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, it did mark our fourth match unbeaten in the top flight, along with three wins on the spin and although Chairman Daniel Levy (and many fans) will breathe a sigh of relief at Europa League football given where we were only a few weeks ago, from a financial point of view it will still be a massive hit to take compared to Champions League revenue.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

But on the topic of the Champions League, this midweek sees us back in action in the Round of 16 and we welcome RB Leipzig to White Hart Lane and given the earlier rumour mill speculation linking us and manager Jose Mourinho with an interest in Dayot Upamecano, we can certainly expect to see his name on the newsfeeds again this week.

For most fans, they will also be paying him slightly more attention just in case the rumours about the French Under 21 international are true.

As for us and this game though, we will just be hoping to keep our more recent run of form going and pick up another victory with further performance improvements to help keep lifting the spirits.

All eyes to 8pm and fingers crossed.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    There’s also Bergwijn… Toby!

In his pre Villa press conference Jose made a clear point in saying that he believes that Lo Celso can play anywhere/everywhere, including striker.. Ah well, it is what it is.

  • Allan says:

Didn’t know documentary on BT will have to record it Thanks for info .
As to Son which is a great shame and we wish him well but others will have to step up beginning with tomorrow . Non of the poossibles have the pace but with Berwijn finding his feet and Tangy please replacing Aurier . Lo Celso being rested and hopefully Ali finding the net we might be able to at least stay with if not beat Leipzig who I thought were impressive vs Bayern recently .
Any news on the big unfit French record buy guy ?

    • PompeyYid says:

Oh another hurdle for Spurs to cross, Son and his broken arm., out for 6-8 weeks, jeez! all the best young man.

So now others will have to step up, because on form there is goals in this team and JM’s tactics now come to the fro, lets non of us panic yet. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Ndombele was on the bench for Villa and is not injured, I think we could see him starting against Leipzig alongside Winks and Lo Celso.

  • Geofspurs says:

Mike England and Greavsie have just watched the BBC Breakfast show and agreed that the highlight was a discussion between HT and TQ about ‘the good old days’.

  • PompeyYid says:

What do you think lads n lassies, will Deli be pushed up front and used as false 9, as long as our vunerable at times defense operates better we will still have pace and playmakers moving the ball quickly to give any team we play problems, so am not being to down hearted just yet! COYS

    • Hot Tottingham says:

I think that could work out PY…

Even though Jose has today clearly said that we have no “on the pitch” striker options now, let alone on the bench. I think he will have quite a clear idea of what he wants to do and who he wants to do it. After all, it wasn’t Son playing so much at the spearhead of our attack until we played Villa. Before that he was using Lucas as the more central striker… He has already said that Lo Celso can play as a striker and he will know that Dele is capable too as that false No.9…

He has options and he knows it. I believe he was just keeping his cards close to his chest. He’ll have a plan and the belief in it too…

  • Geofspurs says:

So Son scored the winning goal with a fractured arm. Does nothing stop him?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Bergwijn left, Dele @ 10, and Lamela on right (until he gets injured again then Fernandes) with Moura up top.

  • El Jefe says:

Bloody typical of our luck – to lose our 2 most potent goal threats possibly for the rest of the season with still 3 months to go. Agree with PY play Dele as a false no.9 and have Lo Celso in at no.10. We’ll have to be extra tight at the back if we are to achieve anything this season – something which has escaped us up until now. Shame Parrott is not apparently ready – would be the perfect foil. We should have signed someone as back-up to HK10 in January apart from Bergwijn but no point crying now – just have to get on with it as best possible.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’ve just watched Jose’s press conference… I have to say that he is growing on me, week by week. I’m starting to like the guy all over again. As I did when he first arrived in England.

Of course, he isn’t at all happy with the Son/Harry/striker situation but, he looks up for the challenge. And I’m sure the players will be up for it, too… (Does he have a plan z? We will see!)

    Come on you Spurs!

  • Allan says:

While we are in a difficult situation I feel that Jose is relishing the situation and it wouldn’t surprise me if the players all rise to the occasion . He was excellent at his press conference.
After all we have new players bought in during the winter TW as well as Nboumbele ? ( if fit ) Davies has also just returned .
We have got rid of Eriksen and replaced with Lo Celso who is class .
If he can sort out the possession in midfield and those players designated as strikers to score goals we will all be delighted and surprised .
    Roll on tomorrow night !!

  • Niall D says:

Did we build our pitch over a native American burial ground. First our goal keeper, then our first choice left back, one of our main midfielders, our First choice Centre Forward, now Sonny. Its two steps forward thee steps back. What bad luck. Could Liverpool, ManU et Al cope with this.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    We’ll be just fine Niall.

The omen is a good one. Bill Nicholson and his wife Grace’s ashes are buried under the pitch.

  • Nialll D says:

Hope you’re right HT. Would’ve been nice at some stage toward the end of the season to have our first 11 all fit and ready to play. It just seems these last few seasons we’ve not had our share of luck. You know the CL final pen. Not getting into our new stadium on time. The year we almost won the league but everyone else including some refs wanted lowly Leicester to get it. I know you make your own luck but hope fully as HT says in the face of adversity we’ll be alright.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I watched the Dortmund v PSG game last night, the young lad Haaland will soon be on his way to Barca, Real or Juve, he is very much in the Kane mould with his style of play and already has more CL goals this season than the entire Barca team!

  • jod says:

The problem isn’t the number of injuries, its who has been injured. If we’d lost a couple of midfield players we would have just shrugged it off, we’ve got plenty, but we’ve lost out two main goalscorers. It highlights the need for balance in a squad, depth across every area of the pitch, something I’m sure Mourinho will be addressing. Its interesting that RB have never spent more than £20m on a player, not going to impress the “spend more money” brigade but it impresses me. Ironically their head of recruitment is Paul Mitchell, who used to work for us.

  • PompeyYid says:

I must agree with you there HT, regards Jose, as a not wanting him fan, though I did say give him a chance, as you he is growing on me, I think he gives his best when he is put in a corner.

Some go on about giving Parrot a go, but what about the other 18 year old Keto, spelling, he is 6ft 4ins tall some target man, just a thought.

My play the game and name a team for tonight side….

    Lloris

    Tanganga…Toby…Sanchez

    Aurier…N’Dombele…Winks…Davies

    Lo-Celso…Deli…Maura

Plus a decent bench to make changes.

My thoughts, and who would be a Prem manager no pressure Lol! COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

In my last post I named an 18yr old 6ft 4ins striker as Keto, so bloody wrong, I am sorry, his name is Kion Etete, I was close though wasn’t I, lol! COYS

  • Niall D says:

Just looked at possible Tottenham line up for tonite’s game.
    Lloris, Toby, Dave, Tanganga, Aurier
    Winksy, N’Dombele, LoCeslo,
    Dele, Lucas, Bergwijn.
    Excuse the spelling.
With Gedson, Lamella, Verts and Eric Dier as subs.
We aren’t in too bad a position.Spurs win 3-0 tonight.
    Excuse my earlier pessimism.
    Coys.
    COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY…….Probably a step to far to expect an 18 year old who hasn’t even played in the PL to debut in such a big game.

    • PompeyYid says:

TQ….I might be a bit long in the tooth but I do realise that, but stranger thing have happened, lol! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    4-2-3-1
    Lloris
    Aurier Toby Sanchez Davies
    Winks Ndombele
    Lo Celso Dele Bergwijn
    Lucas

    Alternatively 3-4-3
    Lloris
    Tanganga Toby Sanchez
    Aurier Ndombele Winks Davies
    Lo Celso Dele Bergwijn

Alternatively…. ??? (Stick Crouchie up top with Defoe in, just behind him!)

Formations to be flexible according to how Leipzig set-up and how the play pans out…

In other words, I haven’t got a clue how Mourinho will approach this game and who he rests or who comes in. Given the crucial match we play on Saturday and that Leipzig are known to be very changeable with their formation…

    Over to you Jose…

    Up The Spurs!
