Opinion: The Tottenham star already emerging as key to Mourinho’s plans

|

Tottenham fans have enjoyed a run of hot form in the last few weeks. The Lilywhites may have had to wait for their clash with Aston Villa on Sunday owing to the Premier League’s first instalment of a winter break, but Jose Mourinho’s side didn’t disappoint, beating the Villans late at Villa Park.

The recent form is certainly impressive. Tottenham have now won their last three games on the bounce in the Premier League, and are unbeaten in their last five in all competitions with the only one of those fixtures they failed to win being the 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s in the FA Cup.

However, one factor in the recent win streak simply cannot be put down to anything other than the recent impact of Steven Bergwijn. The Dutch winger came in late in the January transfer window, signing from PSV for a fee of £27m (BBC), and he’s been superb so far.

Tottenham’s 22-year-old #23 has completed three key passes and one dribble in his first two games for the club, as well as winning five tackles and being fouled on three occasions (WhoScored), jumping in at the deep end for Spurs and already making himself a favourite amongst the supporters.

The next game for the Lilywhites is a tough Champions League clash against RB Leipzig in the round of 16, and there’s almost no doubt that Bergwijn will be in the starting eleven and set to star for Spurs, as his pace down the wing and ability to score and assist from wide areas, carry the ball into the final third and stretch defences makes him a real handful for opposition defences.

Anything can happen in the Champions League, but as Tottenham start to click into gear, the fight for Champions League qualification and the potential of a run deep into the competition this season will certainly be aided by the magnificent Dutchman.
