Match Thread – Spurs Ready For A Turf Up With Burnley

|

With Tottenham Hotspur getting back to winning ways on Thursday evening with a comfortable Europa League Group victory over LASK, it was all eyes back to the Premier League campaign as we make the trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley on Monday evening.

You know exactly what to expect from Sean Dyche’s side – they will be tough, niggly, organised and they will look to break up the improvements we’ve seen in our attacking play of late. With that said, as long as we stay tight at the back and defend set pieces well, we have enough pace and talent to break them open and then it’s just a question of whether or not, we make it count.

Manager Jose Mourinho will undoubtedly rotate the first team squad again in an effort to keep things fresh, but despite getting his first start in midweek, Gareth Bale will likely be back on the bench as we continue slowly building his fitness after injury.

When all is said and done (and with respect), this should be all three points on paper but Burnley won’t make it easy, and West Ham proved we often don’t make it easy for ourselves.

Burnley...

Win

Draw

Lose

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

    Cheers Danny for another post.
TQ and I were discussing gthe very same thing at the end of the last thread.
We were hoping that Burnley do not become the new Stoke.
We were alluding to the fact that a wet Wednesday at Stoke could be replaced with a wet Monday at Burnley. As you said in you thread they have that never say die tough to beat attitude about them.
They are a no frills team who can grind out results.
As you say, on paper we should beat them. Hopefully this isn’t (another) banana skin and we are found to be nieve in defence.
Just looking at the last few weeks, the league looks well open for many teams to win, there is no out and out strong team this year, they all look beatable. I hope the results against N/Castle and W/Ham don’t haunt us later in the season
But I honestly think the league is there for taking. With about 6 or 7 teams in the race currently.

Niall….did you notice Manu didn’t get any penalties in todays game? Did you also notice that they weren’t awarded one against them when Maguire headlocked a Chelsea attacker from behind and pulled him down in the area? 🙂

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Of course…..Chelsea were attacking but it was Chelsea defender Azpilicueta who was headlocked by Maguire.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I think we have a pretty good record against Burnley, even at their place, so expect nothing other than 3 points, wet or otherwise! :- )

We need to be defensively astute against Burnley monday night. not give away silly freekicks mainly by Aurier, as most goals against us are from the rightside and inswinging. Defenders have to get in front of the attacking player and try to challenge better… not allow free headers at goal. Docherty to play RB. Again rotation of players by jose and a 433 / 442 / 352 / 4231 shape. Vinnie as sub. his first taste of PL and Burnley away is a tough game.

Media quotes Burnley player revenge on spurs for goals by sonny,,, hope we score early and keep awake to final whistle, and not switch off again. COYS

    TQ
Have to admit did not see or read anything re ManU Chelsea yesterday.
No pen given to Man U, now there’s something for the books, and no pen for Chelsea even though Maguire headlocked someone.
A pen against Man U to put another team in a winning position, never.
    There is no consprircy TQ.

We have already seen City, United, Villa, and Chelsea drop points this weekend, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Arsenal and Leicester share the points today, and Soton are playing well enough to get a draw if not a win at home to the Toffees. Yet again we have an opportunity to make ground over the other likely title contenders and it’s time we learned to do so if we have any aspiration to considered as one ourselves.

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. Couldn’t agree more, mate. We really need to take all three points. That would take us closer to the average 2 points per game target.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof, as I mentioned earlier, I believe we have a pretty decent win percentage against Burnley but it looks like being a pretty grim wet evening up north so may not be conducive to slick football!

  • Niall D says:

    TQ
Notice the ref was Martin Atkinson.
This ref “appears” not to favour London clubs. I think there was a report on him re his decisions against Arsenal. Also he “Appeared” to celebrate with a fist pump a goal against us by Saha.
    But they’re not biased.

  • Geofspurs says:

I’m waiting for the Everton game to start. I’ll be a Saints fan for 90 minutes!

  • Niall D says:

    TQ
Got that one wrong. It was a fourth official at a Liverpool game did a fist pump on the sidelines.
    Not Martin Atkinson.
So we’re singing when the saints go marching for 90 mins then Geoff OK. Lol.

  • Geofspurs says:

Saints up 2-0 at HT. They are outplaying Everton. There would have to be a huge turn around for Everton to get anything from this. Then again ….

Be nice if Newcastle take something from Wolves, too. And then we’ll just need Arsenal and Leicester to draw. Don’t want much, do we?!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Another result goes our way! :- )

  • Niall D says:

    Is Riiight
Oh when dose Saints go marchin in.
I seriously think the league is wide open.
We have as good a chance as any and better than most.
    COYS.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    And another! :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Leicester mugging the gooners at home wasn’t the ideal result but I’ll take it! lol

Despite Liverpool and City’s performances in the past two seasons the premier league is the most competitive in Europe so its not surprising its hard for any team to keep winning, its why people around the world want to watch it. Its a bit different in Europe, in the Bundesliga the only question is who will finish second to Bayern this time ?

We are still a work in progress, as Jose has alluded to in his comparison to Klopp’s work at Liverpool, so for us its just about winning as many as we can and seeing where it takes us. My big fear is one of the teams not in Europe getting on a run like Leicester did, Everton maybe ?

  • block 108 spurs says:

So far this season, there is signs of an interesting top 4 placings, as there are 7 teams showing good / not so good form. (Leicester & Everton…Liverpool, Man utd, Man city) Results have been unexpected, points dropped.

Spurs have now got a squad of quality players which rotation helps in games for Europa & PL / Cups. Jose has the experience of winning PL / major titles more than once, and should now be getting through to players into the mindset of winners, and not taking it easy when ahead against “lesser” PL teams. It showed when he refused to talk about spursy performances in media interviews after west ham game.

    Tonight Burnley 0- 2 Spurs… COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Jod…..I said at the beginning of the season that Everton might be the team everyone should be wary of having bought in a very decent looking midfield to play under an undoubted good manager. I was quite surprised at how comfortable Soton looked against them yesterday, they have been in good form as evidenced by their draw with Chelsea, but I didn’t expect them to dominate the Toffees the way they did. That said, quality will tell over the whole season so I still expect Everton to be there or thereabouts come May.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I think Ancelotti is wrongly accusing the referee of being influenced by the Pickford incident with Van Dijk when sending off Digne for his tacle on KWP yesterday, he was more likely influenced by the almost identical tackle made by Fulham’s Kamara on Saturday which was initially deemed a yellow card before the referee was advised to review the video himself which resulted in the card being changed from yellow to red.
