Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

Whilst I agree that Dave and Dier do indeed on paper have more experience just like Joe Hart has more experience than Gollini (spelling).
I just feel that ref all three of the above have a “Ricky” in them in every game, I don’t mean an “Aurier” type mistake where impetuousness takes over, there have been a few mistakes by both players in defence, I do think perhaps it is a confidence thing. Can we ride it out another season and risk that they will come good, was Mourinhos’ playing style doomed to fail any defensive line up.
All I know is that when I saw them paired up together I wasn’t impressed, regardless of who leaves we still need at least one CDM to replace Tobs.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Defenders make errors, Niall. All defenders. And the more they have to defend, it is only logical to me that there is an increased chance of them making these errors. Just as the more a striker such as Harry K shoots at a goal, the more he scores! 🙂

For the record and according to the official EPL stats tables. These are the amount of so called ‘errors leading to goals’ made by these following Spurs guys, when compared to the CD that most will say is the PL’s best in recent seasons.

Toby: 200 PL apps, 1 error leading to a goal. 3 own goals.
Dier: 202 PL apps, 6 errors. No mention of own goals.
Sanchez: 101 PL apps, 2 errors. 2 own goals
Van Dyke: 162 PL apps, 3 errors. 0 own goals.

Make of these stats, what you will.

Interestingly, Toby cost Spurs just around £11m. Dier: £4m. Sanchez: Circa £38-42m (?) Van Dyke: A whopping £75m!

They say you get what you pay for… In that case, Toby must’ve been shit! Sanchez is obviously only half as good as Van Dyke… And Dier?! Sunday League player, at best!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

To lead on from my ‘stats’ post that hasn’t yet appeared… (And if it don’t ever appear, I ain’t rewriting it)!

Romero, in 31 appearances for Atalanta has 1 error recorded that led to a goal. No own goals…

I don’t know… These defenders and their errors. They are all rubbish!

  • wentworth says:

If we sell Kane we lose a top striker AND our best midfielder. So we need 2 top replacements…. strong, two footed, good tacklers, good runner, distance shooter, good in the air, great passer.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    wentworth…

You forgot to mention; 2 iffy ‘glass’ ankles and a failure to perform well in cup finals. (For both club and country).

    Kane should go, now! Please!

Thanks Harry, but your (Spurs) time is up…

  • wentworth says:

Maybe HT. But a magnificent all round player with great vision, two superb feet, great penalty taker. We need two world class players to replace one and knowing Levy that will never happen.

  • PompeyYid says:

For me, something good is happening at the Club I have supported for 60+ years.

So many have got used to whinging and whineing that it is part of their make up, please try for once, just wait and see, cheers all. COYS

Whilst I didn’t exactly agree with you on Dave and Dier, I do however strongly agree re Harry Kane, I do feel that this is about our best time to sell him for “top dollar” I think he is just about at his best now, he may remain there for two or three seasons still and possibly will be another Ibrimavich, Cavani, or Kedendowski (spelling), but as you say will the injuries (ankles) start to take their toll and in the last 3 seasons he has ended up injured at around the “pointy end” just about Valentine’s day, and he is usually out for 4 to 6 weeks.
And this could prematurely end his career.
    I would take 100 mil + a decent player from Man C.

  • wentworth says:

The comments about Harry Kane are about right. However, where we would have been in past seasons without him…I shudder to think? Not just because he has been our prolific striker, best midfielder and often best defender but because of his vision, range of passing, determination, goals scored and penalties taken.

Will £100 million buy us an Eriksen/ Hoddle plus a Klinsman/Linekar? Knowing Levy, he will look for unknown cheapies and go for the blue cross deals.

I have already mentioned that we are desperate for a midfield general to dictate play. I love the skills of N’Dombele and the emerging return to form of Dele. But they are not Erikesens. Lo Celso is a no no for me. (too lightweight, limited, poor passer, injury prone, one footed and poor goal scorer despite figuring part time for Argentina).

Therefore,is there a top midfielder with goal scoring potential out there who would come to us? Is there a top goalscoring striker who would come to us?

If we lose Harry, we will have money. BUT will it be well spent? Remember the sale of Bale anyone?

  • Niall D says:

HT we could all comment on Stats as many of us have over the months and years on this site, Ref Dier of his 202 appearances, how many were at CDM and how many pens did he give away from that position losing us matches (I can count two at least without stats ) ?
Dave often loses the bounce of the ball and (for me) can be covering for two very poor RBs but has scored the odd OG (again without stats)
I’m just not confident with these two as our mainstay CDM’s as are many others on this and other sites.
I was of the opinion up until the end of last season that Dier was a decent backup at CDM and DM but I no longer have that faith, I feel he has lost something since World Cup 2018 I don’t know what it is but it’s there.
I won’t agree with you on these two as mainstays in our defence, whether it’s lack of confidence, game time , tactics, or they’re just not up to it there is something lacking in this defensive pairing.
I just wouldn’t have confidence in these two going forward.

  • 123spurs says:

Agree Niall with Davy and dier, both are a liability, both need to move on otherwise its spurs that will suffer again.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Gil and Tomiyasu continue to be involved with the olympics with Spain and Japan winning their quarter finals, if the latter is joining us that’s two squad members who will miss the opening few games of the season.

  • PompeyYid says:

Just read Alfie Devine, 17, has signed his 1st Pro Contract with Spurs.

Word has it deal for Tomiyasu all done and dusted.

An Argie striker, Romero I think, at Flamenco has emerged as a wanted man by us, it appears he scored 68 gls in 98 appearances.

The ITK engine starting to rev up lol!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi PY…..I think you are getting confused by all the players we are supposedly interested in. 🙂

Romero is the Argentinian centre back at Atalanta, the striker you are referring to is the Bazilian Gabriel Barbosa who plays for Flamenco but I believe he spent a couple of years in Italy before moving back to South America.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Watching the French champions cup match between Lille and PSG, I saw it reported that our recruitment team didn’t think Botman was the level we needed at CB but he has looked very decent considering he is still just 21.

  • 123spurs says:

Horror start to the season for poch. Struggling in a one horse league with unlimited budget

  • TQ2Spurs says:

123…he’ll be gone by Christmas! lol

  • Niall D says:

I need to forward this question folks, it’s a bit of a hole in my knowledge, among many others.
We seem to be getting rid of Winks, Hart, Dier even Kane, I thought we needed to maintain a certain amount of “home grown” players, if we don’t start getting British player into the squad, are we not in trouble?? I’m not sure on these rules how many “homers” do we need?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Niall, I’m sure someone will give the official figure but I believe we have to have about 8 homegrown in a squad of 25.

Lots of rumours about an interest in Adama Traore, I suppose it’s natural to be linked with some of Nuno’s ex players. I’m in two minds about him, yes he is exciting to watch, and he terrorises defences, but he has never had an end product when he gets to the opposition box.

  • Niall D says:

    Cheers TQ 👍😉
