Spurs At The European Championships Thread

|

After a long, hard and ultimately disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur, we have a busy summer in store now as we look to both sort out our managerial situation as well as strengthen the group via the transfer market – as massive question being Harry Kane’s own future.

Whilst we’ll hopefully have our new manager in within a few weeks (or maybe our old manager given the Mauricio Pochettino rumours) it’s unlikely much will happen on a transfer front until we see the culmination of this summers European Championship competition.

In a world still dealing with Covid, personally, I think international football is slightly ridiculous at this moment in time, but money makes the world go round doesn’t it – Spurs fans will however have a natural interest in the tournament given the players and former players that should be on show.

If nothing else it’ll be a distraction for a few weeks – so anything Euro related can go in here VSers.

    Sorry mate!

It’s Bryan with a “Y”, not Brian with an “I”

Not very Spanish sounding, either way, is it?

  • Niall D says:

    HT
I suppose not everyone can have a name like Xavi or Innestia however if he comes close in skill to those two I don’t care what he’s called. I’ll enjoy his skills whilst drinking my cerveza or beer.
I’m with you re our possible new signings, but in many ways the balls are in the air until we see what happens with Harry.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Let’s hope this Bryan is the messiah and not a naughty boy! :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Do any of you guys live in the Northampton area or have any knowledge of Caleb Chukwuemeka that we are being linked with? Reports suggest we are offering up to £1m with Kion Etete going the other way. I could google him but prefer first hand knowledge.

  • Frank says:

Are we into a typical Spurs transfer window. Up until now we have signed a “maybe good enough” on loan GK, and a “promising” young Spanish winger with Lamela in part exchange, and we have now sold Toby without a replacement in place. We are now left with Sanchez, Rodon and the youngster as CBs. Are we going to end up stronger at the end of this window than we were at the beginning, unlikely.

    • PompeyYid says:

Frank I see you still have your no-confidence head on lol!
Hope you are keeping well mate!

    • BelgianSpur says:

You forgot Eric Dier, although that may be just conveniently forgetting about him to preserve your mental sanity 😉

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Are we all watching the game tonight?

  • 123spurs says:

Ahhhhh the dreaded goal in the last 5 min, the course continues no matter who is in charge. Better pay up for the roamero guy, or risk losing him.

  • wentworth says:

Watched the M K Dons game with Spurs in their painter/decorator overalls kit (marginally better than the green army/ navy stores kit). Some encouraging performances ( Dele (captain), Son, Lucas, Bergweijn, Skipp, Whiteman). But not Doherty, Carter Vickers. Lots of Spurs fans singing. Dele got standing ovation from both sets of supporters. Is he on the way back?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

WW…….you can see Dele has been working on his fitness and stamina in particular in contrast to Berwijn who looked like he was struggling for breath in the 20th minute after a short sprint. I think the performance was quite encouraging, the players seemed to enjoy being given the opportunity to play on the front foot.

  • BelgianSpur says:

As exciting a prospect as Bryan Gil might be, he is precisely that – a prospect. By definition, a prospect is a player for the future, not the present.

If this is the sort of player we are buying, I think it’s only fair to ask 2 questions:

    1. What is our track record when it comes to buying prospects, our success rate in our ability to transition players from “prospect” status to proven first teamer? We’ll all have our own opinion. Spurs’ record could be worse, it could be better, but I don’t think anyone can deny that there is some risk involved;

    2. If we are indeed looking to the future, what does it say about where we expect to be this upcoming season?

I am all for a rebuild/reset, but in that case, I think the club should accept that we are probably not going to be around the top 4 for a couple of seasons. In that case, I think honest conversations need to be had with players like Kane and Son.

Either we choose to build around those players, accepting that they are in their prime now and not in 2 or 3 years – in which case I don’t see the value of a Bryan Gil-type signing.

Or we need to go all in on a young squad, stockpile on up and coming talent, and sell the players in their prime to finance the arrival of the new generation of Spurs players.

There is no point being stuck in halfway purgatory.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Going all-in with a young squad sounds like the perfect recipe for relegation which would be a disaster for a club of our size, any rebuild will have to be made around a nucleus of experienced players, it’s just a question of which ones are prepared to be a part of it and show faith in what the club are trying to achieve as Sonny has.

  • BelgianSpur says:

I think there are plenty of examples of clubs, over the years, that have put faith in youth and been rewarded, despite what Alan Hansen thinks on the matter.

  • Niall D says:

I think PY and I had a very agreeable discussion re recruitment a few posts ago, we were discussing the merits of signing players aged 28 + I think at the time we both agreed that if they are good enough we should sign them regardless of age and that bringing in a mix of both youth and some experience was a good way to go. For example what is wrong with Cavani? Moderic is still up there and we did OK ourselves with Bale and another season with him in the team may have been beneficial.
I do feel we got rid of Toby a season early, but he may have been with us too long and needed a new challange and perhaps a few extra quid and a last hurrah.
In short there are good deals out there at many ages, but don’t just want a string of 20 year old hopefuls, to sell on in the hope of making a tidy profit.
I feel we went that way with Clarke and Froyth and perhaps Sess, it seems to have fallen a bit flat.
So a good mix of youth and experience is required.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Niall……I actually think this was the perfect opportunity to say farewell to Toby and give thanks for his great service to our club. He has lost a bit of pace in the past two seasons and while he and Jan made a great partnership when playing out from the back I was never convinced by either of them when it came to defending balls in the air, especially from set pieces. I wasn’t wholly convinced by our links to Vestergaard but if you watched him in the Euros he was very rarely beaten in the air in his own box and this has been an area of concern for us for quite a few seasons now. I hope Romero will offer a good balance of feet and heading skills if we get him, he must be pretty decent to be voted best Serie A defender last season when he is up against the likes of Chiellini and Bonucci!

  • Niall D says:

    TQ
Can’t say you’re wrong, as I almost questioned myself in my post, by saying Toby had maybe been too long at the club, my worry or thoughts were that it currently leaves us with Dier and Dave and even given Toby’s advancing years I’d have gotten rid of those two first ir that make sense, but I do take your point and to a degree agree. 😉

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Niall….in my view we need to bring in two first choice CB’s, I think Rodon is going to be a decent 3rd choice and only see Dier as a utility CB/DM. I can’t say I’m thrilled about Tanganga playing this role, he is a bit short for me, seemed to do a decent job at RB so would keep him as a defensive minded version and Doherty as wing back option and get rid of Aurier. Carter-Vickers should have been moved on a couple of years ago.

  • Frank says:

I think we can forget Romano, this is following the proven and well trodden path of an almost endless number of failed transfer attempts. The selling club quotes a fee and our Mr Levy bless him, offers a few grand less, refuses to move and we miss out. Never mind we always have Sanchez and Dier, two alleged CBs, who if glued together wouldn’t make a decent defender between them, and Joe Rodon who looks decent for Wales but doesn’t get a fair crack at Spurs. We have been here soo many times before, zero ambition to improve the team, too busy with Levy’s legacy emporium.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I don’t think we were ever interested in Romano Frank. 🙂

It’s funny how everyone we are reported to be interested in is apparently on Barcelona’s wanted list as well, it’s clearly just a ploy by the selling clubs to inflate the fee they want for their players. Barcelona are broke, they can’t even register most of the players they have signed until they offload players from their massive wage bill. I don’t blame Paratici for sticking to his valuation of Romero, we can’t and shouldn’t just cough up whatever figure the selling club demands.

  • Niall D says:

I do think we’ll get Romero and, for me, it does, show ambition making honest efforts to get players of his Ilk to our team, two or three more of this, standard would be nice.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I felt Toby should’ve been sold, 2 years ago!

I was never that disappointed that he stayed. But I did feel that Sanchez could’ve and perhaps should’ve played a lot more than Toby did, last season. I think Davinson is a very good (and still young) defender and that it hasn’t helped his Spurs’ cause at all, to be so in and out of the team, so much of the time. I think he has played his best for Spurs, when given a decent run in the team. I hope he stays. But if not, so be it.

Ironically, when people are talking about having a good blend of young players along with more experienced ones, (I agree), then Dier and Sanchez are way ahead of Romero with their own level of experience. Both at club level and as Internationals.. And yet here we are discussing whether or not he is worth spending close to £45-50 m for him! This is ridiculous. Especially as Atalanta have only just (in June) forked out what?! £14 m for his Juve buy-out clause?

That is all Juve thought he was worth, just one year ago! And now after just one single stand-out season in Serie A, Atlanta want to take the piss with their evaluation of him!

Of course (if we actually want him), Spurs should aim to get him for less than the ridiculous fee Atalanta are apparently now asking.

And then, I can imagine the moans from some Spurs supporters down the line, if we did fork out for him and he doesn’t then live up to his hype. It’ll be all about Levy overspending on unproven young foreign players that are rubbish! Bit like what I have often seen and heard about Sanchez!

(I also think we’d be wrong to sell Dier at this time… He is a very useful payer imo) …

Our defence last season, were not as poor as many seem to think. At the start of the season they were in fact very good. But our manager Jose, burdened them with an impossible task, given the endless and thankless task of work they were given in having to constantly defend so deep, so often… Blah, blah! We were under a non-stop onslaught! No wonder they buckled…
