‘Really struggled’, ‘Not good enough’ – some fans fume at Tottenham midfielder in 2-1 defeat

|

Tottenham suffered a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon and Victor Wanyama was one of the players blamed for the result. He was brought on when Spurs were 1-0 up and was culpable for the two goals Leicester scored in the second-half to turn the game on its head.

The 28-year-old allowed Ricardo Pereira to make a late run into the box to convert a low cross for Leicester to equalise and didn’t put enough pressure on James Maddison before the midfield by City ahead with a long-range effort. Fans made their feelings clear on social media.

Mauricio Pochettino also came in for criticism after bringing on a player who nearly left the club over the summer – Wanyama came close to joining Club Brugge at the end of the transfer window. The Kenyan international was deemed surplus to requirements but surprisingly found himself back in the first-team and ahead of Eric Dier in the pecking order.

Wanyama made his first appearance of the season over the weekend and has been blamed for Tottenham’s collapse. Pochettino’s decision to introduce him completely backfired, so whether the midfielder will be given another chance against Colchester United (September 24) or Southampton (September 28) remains to be seen.
