Opinion: Tottenham could sign deep-lying playmaker this summer, 2 reasons why

|

According to The Sun, Tottenham look set to miss out on Adrien Rabiot, with Barcelona closing in on his signature. The 23-year-old has reportedly made it clear that he wishes to join the Catalan giants, but has he been told the truth about his chances of regular playing time at the Camp Nou?

One reason he could re-consider a move to Barcelona is because of the stiff competition in midfield. The Spaniards have Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Arthur, Arturo Vidal and Rafinha who can play in the engine room, so Rabiot would have a lot of players to compete with for minutes.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is a talented player, but whether he’ll be a regular for Barca in the middle of the park for the foreseeable future remains to be seen. Tottenham will surely be hoping such uncertainty sees Rabiot open to joining a smaller club that can promise regular football each week.

Even if they can’t convince Rabiot to turn down the Catalans, the likes of Hugo Lloris, Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko should be a lure for the 23-year-old as they’ve played together at club or country level. Having a former teammate in Aurier and current international teammates in Lloris and Sissoko could make a switch to Spurs easier.

It’s a longshot, but the Londoners are exhausting their options and time is running out for them to try and get a deal done.
