Opinion: Manchester United won’t sign key Tottenham player unless 24-year-old is sold

|

According to the Independent, Eric Bailly has an uncertain future at Manchester United, with the club split on whether he’s worth retaining over the summer. If the 24-year-old is sold, United will turn their attention to signing a replacement which could see Toby Alderweireld lured to Old Trafford.

Alderweireld has less than 18 months remaining on his respective deal and has a release clause of £26m. The 29-year-old has been refused a 300% payrise by Tottenham and might be resigned to leaving at the end of the season as a result.

United had a fervent need to strengthen their options at centre-back in January, but they’ve since found peace with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Andreas Lindelof. Bailly, however, is one player who could be sold or kept. Tottenham will be hoping they hold onto him so they leave Alderweireld alone.

Bailly’s form has fallen of a cliff at United and he’s struggled for playing time this season, racking up just 553 minutes of Premier League football. He’s no longer commanding a starting place so it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see him put up for sale.

Tottenham will be bracing bids for Alderweireld this summer and may even consider a potential swap deal that could see Bailly replace the Belgian international. Time will tell.
