During the buildup to the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur were linked with potential moves for a number of players, but as we know, nothing came of our attempts to strengthen the squad. One of those players was a red top exclusive link with Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck with the suggestion at the time being the Emirates outfit would accept £10million.
I wasn’t sold on the idea given his recent injury record, and given the type of player he is, we had alternative cover. Plenty disagreed though and thought, at that price, he’d be a useful addition and an alternative option.
Following the penultimate round of Premier League fixtures for the 2018/19 Arsenal gaffer Unai Emery confirmed what many already knew, Welbeck wouldn’t be handed a new contract and he will leave the club as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract – Sky Sports quoted him saying.
“I spoke with the club and this situation, and the decision is he is going to leave.”
As a freebie, wage demand dependent obviously, if there was any truth to our interest back then, with manager Mauricio Pochettino making no bones about strengthening now over the summer, I wonder if this will gain traction on the rumour mill again.
The biggest question would no doubt be his fitness given he’s had another season blighted by a long term ankle problem.
