England striker Harry Kane’s future was certainly in doubt this time last summer as Manchester City were heavily circling, but with no true release fee in his Tottenham Hotspur contract, chairman Daniel Levy held firm and refused to sanction a move.
Not a lot has changed this summer, other than the 29 year old skipper now only has 12 months remaining on his existing deal, and for all intents and purposes after last summer, he will not be penning a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it seems quite likely that his new destination could well be the German Bundesliga as Bayern Munich have been very heavily linked with him in the last few weeks.
With Spurs travelling out at the weekend for their pre season tour of Australia and the Far East, Kane has been included in that group as new manager Ange Postecoglou wanted to spend some proper time with him to outline his future vision for the side in an effort to convince him to stay.
Speaking after that meeting had taken place, the former Australian international gaffer tried to downplay expectations by saying that the chat was ‘nothing earth shattering’.
“I had a good chat with Harry. It was nothing earth-shattering as people are seeking. Just a good chat, introduced myself, and we spoke mainly about the club, where it’s at and where he thinks can improve. It’s not a specific vision for one person, it’s about the group and we’re perfectly aligned on that – we want to see a successful team this year.”
Postecoglou did state that whilst Kane remained at the club, he was ‘totally committed to what we’re doing’ but naturally he could not guarantee that Bayern Munich, or another side, would not eventually make an offer that the clubs board simply could not refuse given the contractual situation.
With two bids already having been apparently made by the German giants, it has been reported that Levy met with their representatives last Thursday to see if the remaining differences could be solved, and Uli Hoeness, their honorary president, went further by saying discussions had also been held with Kane’s advisors and he remained confident that a deal would ultimately be done this summer.
It certainly sounds like something is a foot, as although Kane apparently has a new deal on the table from Spurs, including a significant wage increase, it remains unsigned as he mulls over other alternatives.
We will have to see what the next few weeks bring as given Kane’s scoring record, if Spurs do cash in, they will prefer a foreign and non Premier League destination for him surely.
