The CovYid Distraction Thread 1

|

With the current hiatus in the 2019/20 fixture list and no real clues as to when, or if, the campaign will continue or be voided – we all need a bit of distraction as we know transfer rumours have already spiked and there will be more nonsense on the newsfeeds than even Donald Trump can muster in a single off-script press conference.

While away the time here with chat, nonsense and even good news stories doing the rounds to help keep our spirits up during this period.

And above all else, as we self isolate or social distance – follow the advice – but don’t forget to say ‘morning or evening’ to folks and check if those close to you (or even the random neighbour you don’t really know) are okay.

We’ve all seen stories of the worst of us, let’s make sure we continue to do our part in being the best of us.

Geofspurs….a very good soap box post there, trouble is it ain’t going to happen, certain members of this world of ours hate the West and its way of life, plus there are many countries govs who just do not give a shit about the little person, shame on them, great idea though mate. COYS 4 ever just lol!

  • Danny Winter says:

This is just getting bloody ridiculous now.

Tottenham’s players have been reminded of their responsibilities during the coronavirus lockdown after some were spotted flouting social distancing rules as Jose Mourinho was seen working in a public park with Tanguy Ndombele.
    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11970186/jose-mourinho-trains-in-park-and-tottenham-issue-social-distancing-reminder

Is Premier League football trying to pull the plug on itself and alienate everyone – and we get this on a night where a 70 y/o ‘STAR’ who came out of retirement to answer the NHS’s call has died of the pandemic.

    Give me strength.

  • total knobhead says:

I’m with you on this one, DW. I’m an embarrassed Spurs supporter today with the social distancing diss and DL taking money away from employees while he keeps a 3 million salary and 4 million bonus. This is not supposed to be the Spurs way. greedy gits at the top. toss ’em out.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

It looked very much so that they did practice “social distancing”, Danny. But what they were doing against government advice is exercising with each other but not as being members of the same household. Unless they all do live together in one big happy Lilywhite commune that is!

It’s not that bad really. It’s not what they are supposed to be doing but it’s not as though they were filmed having a big social get together with hugs and kissed all round… Just a wee bit of training. That’s all.

Silly boys though and Jose should know better…

    • Danny Winter says:

Tis why I said PL as opposed to anything Spurs specific HT. Grealish, Walker, PFA, Wages, players whinging they are being singled out, Masters’ response to the MP about furloughing – it’s all building and beginning to leave me with a taste that hopes the whole thing goes bankrupt.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Still a deafening silence from the PFA and the pariah that is Gordon Taylor. Much of the media debate seems to overlook or gloss over the main point being made by fans and others from outside the game. It is clearly immoral for PL clubs to be using the government furlough scheme for non-playing staff while still paying their players and coaching staff bucket loads of money.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

And, for a bit of balance to the above and the negativity that the media and even us supporters often like to taint THFC with; Jose has been very proactive during this crisis in his local area by personally helping local charities with the delivery of food parcels to the elderly etc.

JM is known for being very generous in the past for his charitable work and financial donations. (Something I had read before the C-19 all kicked off).

In fact THFC as a club have bee very involved in numerous and positive community projects under Levy and most of our players also get hands on with their involvement with local projects.

Also, I’m sure that I read a few weeks ago that THFC wasted no time giving up space in the stadium to set up a food bank for local NHS staff. Of course this not headline stuff is it?

I say please don’t judge footballers, chairman and managers etc., as just one homogenous, greedy and selfish lump of no good, non good-doers. They should be viewed as individuals and every bit as human and caring (or non-caring) as the rest of us. I believe that the vast majority of them will be quietly doing their bit to help…

Their wealth alone is not a sign that they are greedy and just don’t care. Of course it isn’t. And, even a poor man can be greedy and selfish too. Just as even some carer colleagues of mine over 25 years of being a support worker, haven’t all necessarily worked in the job with the best of intentions. There are certainly ones I’ve known that would not be at all worthy of my applause, for sure. Thankfully they don’t usually last long in the job… They get found out soon enough.

As in all walks of life there are good and bad. I praise the good in most of us but many of us really could do a lot better, most of the time! And with or without the threat of Covid-19 being our killer…

  • PompeyYid says:

There are some good to and fro, for and against posts on here at the mo, all very worthy, all giving food for thought, well done my fellow Yids.

As all know I am a carer for my vulnerable disabled wife, well now we are both in total lock down, my wife being housebound anyway, plus cannot be left on her own, and now me, we had to let the wife’s carer go for all our health sake’s, the carer came in for a nos of hrs daily allowing myself some “jobs to do and me time” so non of that now, it really is a testing time, but head up and keep going, so I say to all my fellow Yids keep safe and abide by the rules. COYS 4 ever.

  • PompeyYid says:

Just read some bad news, our great Jimmy Greaves has been admitted into hospital, something other than C-19, our thoughts are with you, and get well soon Jimmy. COYS 4 ever

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I just don’t get it, Jose has admitted breaking social distancing rules but must have known he and the 3 players were doing so when they met up in public. In my 60+ years as a supporter I have never been so embarrassed to be associated with our club!

  • Loz says:

First i am still quietly holding back from judging Levy for the forlough and cuts. I wait to see how this pans out because i do believe he does a lot for the community and he is a expert in his field of business and those throwing him under the bridge are not. I just got a feeling we will see things change and it will explain later why he took the decisions. I myself can see why he has from a accounting prospective and business perspective even though it feels uncomfortable morally. The owner isnt allowed to throw money at the club due to ffp and the players cant make their kind up and every day without revenue in is a day that puts the club under pressure for the future, i know this has i do understand business and accounts that’s my background. Also its too soon to judge has we don’t know what is happening regarding whether we will finish the season and if we do when. I say hold back from judging and wait and see, may be Levy has inside information we don’t know about. It wouldn’t surprise me if clubs will end up doing the same in time. It takes balls to lead the way in business and Levy has led the way with forloughing and making cuts.

Jose social distancing well may be he is trying to get sacked like the Scottish health advisor. May be he knows there is no money next season and he can’t win anything with this squad and wants to get sacked now, just joking but seriously he is an idiot and its shameful just like it was with the Scottish medical advisor. I am 100% sure this wouldn’t have happened under MP he would do then right things for sure, that is the decline we are on. We had a manager who had a genuine humble side to him and a man who imo was a humanitarian and spiritual and genuinely always tried to be a good person. Jose i am not saying he is a bad person but he has history of doing things that are just not tasteful. I suppose this is one of his ‘new mistakes’ he referred to. Tbh i want to go back to MP days where the club was adored and where i think MP brought the nest out of Levy and the players has humans. I dont see the bond, the family, the goodness at our club compared to MP days. MP would have been helping the players now regarding making a decision to help financially, they knew they could talk to him, don’t see that with Jose. Our club has imo undone a growing reputation we built under MP since sacking him and appointing Jose both on and off the pitch.

Those who think they are above social distancing are imo reckless and need to be made accountable. I suppose nothing will happen, never does when you re in a position of power although the Scottish medical advisor resigned, but she wasn’t sacked.

This lockdown will bring the best and worse out of people, its new territory for most people and the longer it goes on the more we will see these things happen, good and bad. Walker is an example, can’t cope with lock down so has to entertain himself with sex breaking governments with absolutely no respect for anyone else. Players breaking social distancing and now our manager is just showing us how people can’t cope when their structures collapse. I just hope their negligence and disrespect hasnt and doesn’t cost lives.

For me its sit back and observe regarding Levy and his decisions and not rush in and judge and has for the players and jose training may be the club need to fine them heavily and donate it to nhs or food banks.

I wish Greaves a full recovery from whatever he is experiencing and i pray Sonny doesn’t get hurt on duty and most of all i pray and send blessings to everyone who are experiencing this nasty virus and who have lost loved ones. Be safe, be kind and be sensible.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Perhaps PFA have their own agenda for players not reducing wages?? Lower union dues paid ??

Levy did indeed offer the car park at the new stadium, 2 charities food deliveries local N London area.

Respect to Danny Rose.. 19k donation to NHS N Midd. Hosp.. and then Hundreds of Domino Pizza delivered

So not all bad… but the bad news always outshines the good news.

  • Danny Winter says:

Toby’s tablet donation drive as well.

FFP is a red herring here. Football is paused therefore no football related activities – it’s cashflow and enabling a club to tide over – owners can invest whatever they want in reality here (outwith first team/coaches/transfers).

  • PompeyYid says:

All this crap regards JM and the other 3 lads, leave it out, JM say trains N’Dombele, as long as he sticks to the 2m rule where’s the prob, ditto the same for the other 2 running together.

When I was able to get out the same scenario by locals keeping fit in local park, nobody grouping, old bill had a word to make sure they understood the rules, thus let em get on with it, didn’t read eff all about it in the “lets have a dig at Spurs” Media.

Oh yes! not a lot said by the same Media regards all the good things JM has done locally since the this effin Virus hit.

Some are taking the Media crap bait “hook line and sinker” COYS 4 ever.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY….Jose and the 3 players ignored the goverment social distancing rules on a number of levels, we should all be familiar with them by now so shouldn’t be a need for me to explain. Jose has publicly admitted to the fact.

If he and the players felt they could train safely while maintaining social distancing then why didn’t they do so at the training ground out of the public eye? This would of course still contravened the rules so you just have to assume they didn’t think things through before meeting up.

The only positive aspect to this is the fact that Jose is working with Ndombele rather than slagging him off in public.

  • Danny Winter says:

So players understandably want to charity the NHS given their wealth but nothing about protecting their own club/club staff/fellow clubs or fellow players who don’t happen to live inside of their pampered Premier League bubble?

    Interesting.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11970752/coronavirus-premier-league-players-launch-charity-fund-to-help-nhs

  • TQ2Spurs says:

This is typical DW, by making charitable donations they can probably offset this against their personal tax liability!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

TQ… Are you now saying that the players shouldn’t be helping out with their charity?

Once again, I don’t think it’s fair to judge people’s actions until this is all over. There is a long way yet to go in this and a lot more can and will be done.

In this the PL players have acted in union. And have formed “PlayersTogether” which is set up to provide much needed funds and direct and instant help for the NHS and its front line staff. Is this not at all highly commendable? Is it not a generous act?

What they then go on to do is anyone’s guess. But they have stated that this is their own initiative to directly support the NHS. And is separate from anything that concerns their clubs and the league itself. Why not wait and see what happens with them and their clubs and the league before we condemn them. After all, it’s the clubs that pay their hefty salaries. And so why would they now choose to bite the hand that feeds them?

If they do all come out of this in a bad light then I will condemn them too. But remember this. The vast majority of them are from humble, working class backgrounds and they are more than aware of what it’s like for the people that come from their backgrounds. They will have family members that are in the NHS, carers and key workers in all fields of essential employment. They are not unfeeling robots. They are you and me.

  • Geofspurs says:

There is no ‘universal law’ that says individuals with more should give to individuals with less. Everyone makes their own decisions based on their own reasons and life philosophy. Everyone’s circumstances are different and the way they determine their lives is their own business. Obviously those people in need will talk about a ‘moral responsibility’ but that means nothing and is a phrase usually adopted by people who want or need something from others. Moaning or abusing individuals because it’s thought they could do more, when there is no legal obligation to do so, has little meaning.

However …. Governments around the world are spending billions to keep their economy afloat and provide the basic needs of their people. But beneath all governments sits the church? It seems to me that they should be providing similar assistance as the governments … given the basic universal religious sentiments of peace, love, and understanding. The people have made them rich. Surely it’s time to give some of it back.

It’s normal, when very bad things happen, for people to look for someone to blame. That comes from fear, anger and confusion. But it rarely helps. Sometimes it’s just the universe reminding us what an insignificant part the human race plays in the great scheme of things.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

No HT of course I’m not! It might be somewhat cynical of me to mention charitable donations possibly being tax deductable but still applaud them for doing something when the governing bodies are still sitting on their hands at a time when we are seeing nearly 1000 deaths each day in the UK and millions of people are in fear of losing their jobs.

I praise them for taking unilateral action but they have been prompted to do so because of the lack of any action being taken by the governing bodies, the players union, or indeed most of the clubs. I dare say they are embarrassed by their respective clubs, I don’t think it’s coincidental that the project is being lead by Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane although Liverpool have now reversed their decision to furlough non-playing staff.

I note that Southampton have just announced that the all of the coaches and first team squad have agreed to defer their wages in full for 3 MONTHS and will not use the furlough scheme. It is also reported that Real Madrid players have agreed to a 20% pay cut to support non playing staff and talks are apparently at an advanced stage for Man City players to take a cut for the same purposes. Even Stoke City have vowed to support their staff from within the club and not look for government handouts.

The lack of any decisive action from governing bodies, and the PFA in particular, is nothing short of shameful.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

I know you wouldn’t really think that TQ. But going on to point out that 1000’s are losing lives and many more risk losing their jobs has nothing to do whatsoever with PL footballers and their money or any apparent or perceived lack of morality in them. Whether they are doing their bit to help or not.

We haven’t a clue what any single one of them is really feeling. We don’t know what any one of them will do next that could be seen as worthy. They are in the same boat as you and I mate. Jesus, even our PM is in intensive care. Do we say so what? Boris is from a very privileged background, so does that make him any less human in all of this?

This is not me feeling sorry for anyone here. It is me feeling all too human and fragile myself. As we all inevitably are. Money or no money. C-19 or no C-19…

Footballers have mothers, fathers, grandparents, children and friends that may be dying from this disease right now. Will their money directly save their lives? Will their wealth make them any less sad at their loss when someone close to them dies? I repeat, they are no different to you or I. They really aren’t.

Some of those wealthy young guys will be alone right now, away from family and living in a foreign country. No matter what Levy or whoever pays them, they could well be suffering. Depressed, fearful and uncertain for their future. Worried like hell for the family and extended family that many of them will financially support . Desperate! Just like the bloody rest of us!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….I can’t agree with you comments about ‘moral responsibility’, I am one of those talking about the need for people in priviledged positions to be aware of this but I’m not one of those in need. I am retired and live on a very meagre pension, it affords me a comfortable life without any frills, but I ask for nothing else for myself.

As far as I am concerned clubs (PL in particular) taking money from the goverment, while still paying their playing staff huge wages, is immoral and takes funds that could be supporting others more in need, or indeed going directly into the NHS.
