Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has now completed his expected move to the Chinese Super League and, subject to international clearance, he has agreed a new deal at Guangzhou R&F.

The 31-year-old has been unavailable for manager Mauricio Pochettino since injury sidelined him back in November but links with a move out to Chinese game have been with us for months as the popular midfielder moved towards the end of his contract.

Having come into White Hart Lane from Fulham back in 2012 for a reported £15million, the Belgian was more than worth his transfer fee and quickly established himself in the side, and he departs with ten goals to his name, in well over 200 appearances.

I imagine fans had accepted he was going to be moving on this month and we have secured £11million apparently so it was a good business decision and avoids us losing him for free, even if he could’ve still done a job for us.

Speaking to Spurs TV, Dembele explained.

“I’ve always had a good experience here. I go away with an unbelievable feeling and with a certain love for the club. The club is part of my family now.”

The feeling was mutual from fans who were sad to see the confirmation come in.

  • With his body falling apart how exactly was Dembele going to “do a job for us” ? The only way he was going to be able to keep playing football was to go somewhere it was a lot less physically demanding, hence China. The real question is do we need a replacement and if so who ? (please no more men with no names). I would argue that both Sissoko and Winks are a natural fit for Dembele’s role but not for Dier’s. Its a replacement for Wanyama rather than Dembele that looks the priority to me.

  • One of the best CM’s we have ever had in the Premiership. Only Modric comes near him.

If people think Winks, Sissoko are better or are equal you need your heads tested. Even at 60% he is better than everyone we have at the club.

The time is right for him to go, however we must spend money on a new CM/DM.

  • Real Deal _ Better than when ? Dembele in his prime two seasons ago was definitely a better player. The problem is that player doesn’t exist anymore. At 60% no player can be effective in a league as demanding as ours, in China ? maybe.

    • Watch Dembele against Juve away last season. None of our current crop will ever dominate a game like that.

Dembele was the best CM in the league for a good 2 and a half years from 2015-18.

As Poch and other spurs players have said he was hands down the best player at the club. Other players from other clubs have said he is the best opponent they have ever come up against.

I get it the time was right, he was going on a freebie in the summer so makes sense to cash in. But we must sign a new beast in midfield.

  • Sissoko is 30 in a few months. As someone who heavily relies on his athleticism, I doubt he has too much long left at the top either.

  • Isn’t Sissoko injured with a groin issue? Muscle injuries tend to increase when you push an ageing body to its limits as was the case with Dembele over the last 2 years. it doesn’t get easier post 30.

  • One way for explosive players to prolong their careers into their 30’s, is to alter their style of play, for example Ryan Giggs and Steven Gerrard. Even Cristiano Ronaldo has played more of a traditional striker role over the last couple of years, rather than the explosive forward he was in his 20’s.
