Opinion: Two reasons why Tottenham won’t sign French international in January

|

According to reports in Italy, Tottenham are considering a move for Blaise Matuidi as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele who signed a three-year deal with Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F.

The Belgian international was injured for most of the season, but Mauricio Pochettino was banking on having him back for the second-half of the campaign. Now Dembele has gone, Tottenham are likely to shop in the transfer market for a midfielder of substance.

Spurs have been linked with a host of names, but Matuidi popping up is a surprise. The French international has made 17 Serie A appearances this season and still has 18 months remaining on his contract. He’s a key player at Juventus, missing just four games in all competitions, so why would they sell him?

Why Matuidi would want to leave Juve is also worth asking. The 31-year-old’s side are currently top of the Serie A table, nine points clear of Napoli. It would make little sense in the midfielder making the move from Turin to London mis-season.

Matuidi would certainly improve the Tottenham midfield, but Juventus aren’t going to sanction a move, nor would the player request a transfer.
