Spurs linked with promising Spanish midfielder

|

The transfer season is starting to heat up with many clubs now making inroads to improve there squad this January.

Spurs seem to be one of those clubs as they have been linked with a move for Lecce midfielder Joan Gonzalez, that is according to Calcio Mercato who states that the Lilywhites have sent a number of scouts to watch the Spaniard this season.

Valued at around £9 million (according to Calcio Mercato), Gonzalez may be a bargain option for Spurs this January. The 20-year-old may also help with the current lack of creativity from midfield as despite playing in a very defensive Lecce side, he has managed three goal contributions from 17 appearances so far this season.

So would a move for Gonzalez be worthwhile for Spurs?

If you were looking at his numbers (provided by FB Ref) you may wonder why Spurs are actually interested in the La Masia graduate. As the midfielder ranks in the bottom 4% of midfielders (across Europe’s top five leagues) for touches and passes completed per 90. However, if you were to dive a bit deeper you may find that those statistics aren’t necessarily his fault, that is because Lecce averages the least amount of possession in Seria A, retaining the ball only 41% per game (via FB Ref).

So you could argue that if Gonzalez was placed into a more possession-based side like Spurs, who average 51.7% possession per game, he could potentially thrive and showcase more of his excellent technical ability.

Also, the fact that the Spaniard stands at 6ft 2, suggests he would fit in with Conte’s requirement of having physically gifted midfielders, with Spurs stalwarts Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg both standing just short of the 6ft 2 mark themselves.
