“Spurs-Biased Positivity Sorely Bruised” “Should Be Applauded For Maintaining Third Place” – Saints Defeat Sparks Contrasting Reactions

|

With frustrations at Tottenham Hotspur coming to the fore once more following the hugely disappointing defeat to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium last weekend, two comments stood out hugely to me from the Match Thread.

Football is always about opinions and there are huge areas of gray, basically because it’s a game where you can put 40,000 people together, they watch the same game, they watch the same performances and they each see the same highs and lows – yet you will easily get 40,000 different opinions at the end of the game.

I don’t agree 100% with each of the comments, but I agree with large parts of both and they are equally as valid as each other, although both Vital Spurs members are coming from slightly different sides of the track I think.

Either way it’s a good read and I hope neither mind me nicking their submissions and giving them a greater audience.

As for the football? Who knows but I don’t think the players have given up on our season just yet. I know I haven’t.

It’s funny to me how so many supporters are talking about the possible failure of us now finishing in the top 4 this season, whilst we are actually still in 3rd right now. It’d be a lot tougher to do if we were in 6th!

Yes, we have somehow suddenly conspired to concede a 9/10 point gap between us and those just below us. But that gap was made by Spurs in the first place. It wasn’t given to us out of the kindness of others. And there is every chance that we can still hold onto 3rd place, no matter by how many points. But we’ll just have to see how it goes.

If anything, I should be more ****** off than most on here. It was only just over two weeks ago that I was still attempting to convince everyone that we were strong title contenders. Unfortunately, the players and manager have let me down…again!

But football can always surprise us and in good ways too. The CL has shown us this. And a win at Anfield in the next one may further prove it.

In the past few weeks I have had my usual Spurs-biased positivity sorely bruised after having my Lily-white coloured optimism dislocated during the Burnley match. I managed to pop it back into place after the Dortmund match and then the Saints went and kicked me real hard in the balls!

But, I won‘t let a few poor games of football get me down…I’m far too old and sensible for that! Haha!

I think the main reason for our current form is that we are simply not good enough. In many ways the team should be applauded for maintaining third place for as long as we have.

All this guff mainly spouted by the media about our first eleven being so strong is nonsense. IMO Lloris (too many mad moments) Trippier, Aurier, Davies, Rose (can’t play two games in a row), Dier (has gone backwards), Winks (promising but no more) and Sisokko (greatly improved but still not top class) are not good enough for a top four team with title intentions.

We have also had serious injuries although many were predicting this at the start of the season due to the lack of squad depth and the extended world cup for so many of our players.

Much as we try to deny it, we are still incredibly Spursy. It is a very hard tag to shake off but the amount of times we throw away matches that we are in control of – Saturday being a prime example. I was watching the game and at half time, you simply could not see us losing. However as a Spurs fan, in the back of my mind I still had a feeling that we would throw the game away. It’s just what we do.

The biggest issue, of course, is the criminal negligence of the board/manager in thinking that we could compete as a top four team without strengthening the squad. With such a policy, it was/is inevitable that maintaining a top four position could only be sustained for so long. I thought we would have at least one more season in the Champions League but I fear that the new stadium will be hosting Thursday night football next season – a half empty stadium as well.
