Sheringham Sends Spurs A Warning – “That’s Not Good Enough”

|

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham has become the latest pundit to throw his hat into the ring when it comes to the potential future of England striker Harry Kane and our ongoing search for silverware.

With a clear dip in form of late and some disappointing results, it has taken the shine off what was otherwise quite a positive season in the eyes of many – domestic Cup disappointments aside. The campaign is far from over on a Premier League and Champions League front and it seems our return to White Hart Lane and the boost that will give us edges ever closer according to recent reports – but with Kane scoring his 200th career goal (internationals included) in our unexpected defeat last weekend to Southampton, the same old criticisms are being trotted out.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme, Sheringham warned that at some point Kane would want to move on to have some trophies to show for his goal return.

“It’s going to be a big factor with Harry that Tottenham are moving into a new stadium – but they have to win something. At the moment, they are nearly at the top. For me, that’s not good enough for Harry Kane because he is tops. There is going to come a time in Harry’s career when he is going to say: ‘I can’t be a nearly man any more. We have to go one step further for me to win things in my football career. You don’t get any younger in football and it’s amazing how quickly it flies by.”

It’s certainly a topic that won’t go away but it’s an easy stick to beat Spurs with when you don’t factor in everything else like comparable transfer spend. It’s also easy to second guess and make suggestions on what Kane will want in the future. It might be rare in modern day football but there’s guesswork involved in saying Kane will definitely be off to win things, just as there is in saying he’ll become a one club legend.

The overall curve that Spurs are on is one of improvement, but next summer is undoubtedly key when it comes to strengthening given the doubts we have over some players and I think everyone agrees that whilst we got some very good talent coming through again, we do need to boost the overall quality of the squad to help push us to that next level.
