Report: Sporting director admits interest in Tottenham man, could sign him over the summer

|

Athletic Bilbao sporting director Rafa Alkorta admitted he would be interested in re-signing Fernando Llorente. The striker has an uncertain future at Tottenham, having struggled for playing time under Mauricio Pochettino. He’s out of contract at the end of the season and no extension appears to be on the horizon so Llorente could be a free agent in July.

Bilbao were linked with a move for the 33-year-old during the January transfer window, but Llorente ended up staying at Tottenham as a result of Harry Kane’s injury. He spent the first-half of the season on the periphery but has recently returned to the starting lineup and has impressed, and Alkorka has hinted that the Spanish outfit could return for the striker.

When asked by AS if he was interested in signing Llorente, the sporting director said: “We are attentive to any player who can wear the Athletic shirt”. Llorente made 327 appearances for Bilbao between 2004 and 2013 before making the switch to Juventus. He spent two years in Italy before joining Sevilla (2015) for 12 months and then Swansea City (2016) for another year.

Tottenham signed Llorente in 2017 to provide backup for Kane and he’s finally getting his chance to impress. The Spaniard has contributed nine goals in 18 games in all competitions this season, playing in seven of Spurs’ last nine league outings.
