Report: Inter ‘monitor’ Tottenham defender and consider ‘possible move’ in January

|

According to Sky Italia, Inter Milan are ‘monitoring’ Jan Vertonghen and are considering a ‘possible move’ in January. The 32-year-old is expected to leave next summer as he’s out of contract in July, but whether Spurs would sanction a mid-season transfer remains to be seen.

Vertonghen has been inconsistent in 2019/20, but his exit in January would force the Lilywhites to locate a replacement. Juan Foyth would be Spurs’ only cover at centre-back. Inter would have more luck getting the Belgian international if they offered a pre-contract deal to sign him in July.

Two months into the season, Vertonghen has made nine appearances in all competitions. He was dropped in August due Mauricio Pochettino’s unhappiness with his training ground performances and has been recently dropped for Davinson Sanchez due to poor form.

Nevertheless, keeping Vertonghen for the rest of the season makes more sense. The 32-year-old’s expiring contract will lower his asking price, so overseas clubs aren’t going to put up a lot of money when they can agree a bosman deal.

Time will tell if Inter make a formal approach.
