Toby Alderweireld was heavily criticised for his performance in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Watford, and Jan Vertonghen found himself being slated by supporters on social media too. The 32-year-old has underperformed this season and looks to be declining as a player.
Watford’s sixth-minute goal came from a swift counter-attack and saw a Daryl Janmaat cross beat Vertonghen & Alderweireld on its way through to Abdoulaye Doucouré. Over the course of 90 minutes, the Belgian struggled to thwart the Hornets and was wasteful in possession.
I think Vertonghen is completely done now. Don't know if he's injured or what but too slow and ponderous! Need someone better alongside Toby and definitely need a right back. Aurier and KWP are not even close to being good! #tottenham #thfc #COYS

Sad to say but it's time for Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dier, Wanyama, Rose, Aurier & Kane to go …
Kane not for the sake of us but for himself, he deserves better and we cant provide him that.
Poch also needs to go, too much of a nice guy.
Time for a hard rebuild.#THFC

-Ndombele, Son and Lamela should have all started.
– Vertonghen should be dropped.
– Lucas Moura more effective as a substitute. And why did we decide to start playing when we had minutes to go…? #THFC #COYS

Today was a tough watch, but that final 10 minutes gives me a lot more optimism. We need that from minute one.
As for Rose, it’s sad to say it but he looks completely gone. Even tougher to say, Vertonghen does too.
Lamela and N’Dombele excellent off the bench. #THFC #COYS

As per WhoScored, Vertonghen made 114 touches, drew one foul, made one clearance, completed one successful dribble and completed 88.9% of his 108 passes. The central defender failed to make a tackle, interception or blocked a shot. He didn’t win a single aerial duel either and could find his performances dictating his future – reports suggest he won’t get a new deal until he improves.
Vertonghen has made eight appearances in all competitions, conceding 18 goals and keeping only one clean sheet. He’s been on the winning team only twice and may not be guaranteed a place in the side when Tottenham face FK Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League on Tuesday.
