Opinion: Tottenham won’t sign 24-year-old for £75m despite reports, here’s why

According to The Sun (page 67 of the print edition) on November 17, Tottenham could make a bid for Nathan Ake in January and may have to battle Manchester City for the 24-year-old’s signature. Whether Daniel Levy will front the money required to sign Ake in the winter transfer window remains to be seen, however.

The Netherlands international has three years remaining on his deal at Bournemouth and is a key player under Eddie Howe. Ake is also valued at £75m which would smash Tottenham’s transfer record. The Lilywhites need to offset the eventual loss of Jan Vertonghen & Toby Alderweireld, but it’s hard to see them making a big-money signing midway through the season.

Ake has made 103 appearances in all competitions for the Cherries, scoring and creating 15 goals. The 24-year-old has played every minute of every Premier League game this season and has helped Bournemouth into the top-half of the table. Only five clubs have a better defensive record (15) than Howe’s men and only five clubs have kept more clean sheets (3).

Man City’s interest in the defender could also be a spanner in the works for Tottenham, so the likelihood of Ake moving to North London is slim.
