Opinion: Tottenham won’t sign 21-year-old in January, Pochettino unlikely to hijack bid

|

According to the Mirror (h/t Express), Manchester United are leading Tottenham and Liverpool in the race to sign Steven Bergwijn, having sent scouts to watch the PSV Eindhoven forward against FC Emmen on January 20. Despite Bergwijn being heavily linked with a move to Spurs earlier in the season, it’s hard to see them making an approach with only days remaining of the winter transfer window.

That’s not to say the 21-year-old wouldn’t be a good addition to the squad, however, with Bergwijn scoring and creating 18 goals in as many Eredivisie games this season. The Dutch international has also created 44 chances and made 52 successful dribbles for PSV. Tottenham aren’t short on attack options (Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Christian Eriksen, Heung-min Son) so there’s little reason for them to sign a new player without offloading an existing one.

Mauricio Pochettino is likely to put his focus into signing a midfielder after Mousa Dembele left to join Guangzhou R&F, so Bergwijn won’t be made a priority. Tottenham shouldn’t stand in United’s way of signing the young forward as it makes little sense to spend what little money they have on a position they’re overstocked in.
