Opinion: Out-of-favour Dutchman could leave Tottenham on loan in January

|

According to Fotospor, Tottenham have offered Vincent Janssen to Galatasaray on loan until the end of the season. The 24-year-old has struggled for form and playing time since making the move from AZ Alkmaar in 2016, making just 12 starts in all competitions.

Janssen has failed to make a single appearance this season as he’s been sidelined with a foot injury, but he’s recently returned and finds himself behind Harry Kane, Fernando Llorente and Heung-min Son in the pecking order. The Dutchman’s last outing for Tottenham came all the way back in August 2017 and he spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce.

Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t shown much willingness to play Janssen after his failed debut season, but time is running out for Spurs to offload the centre-forward. There’s a slim chance Janssen could be retained too, as Kane’s injury has opened the door for another striker to feature. The English international is out of action until March and Fernando Llorente deputised in his stead.

Janssen could put himself in contention of making the matchday squad if he can prove his fitness to Pochettino, so his Tottenham future isn’t necessarily dead in the water. A loan move to Galatasaray could still be an attractive proposition, however, if it guarantees him playing time. Janssen still has 18 months remaining on his contract, so he could return to Spurs next summer and fight for a place.
