Match Thread – Spurs Seeking Wings As We Leipzig Back Into Champions League Action

|

With Tottenham Hotspur lifting themselves back into the mandatory European places with victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, it did mark our fourth match unbeaten in the top flight, along with three wins on the spin and although Chairman Daniel Levy (and many fans) will breathe a sigh of relief at Europa League football given where we were only a few weeks ago, from a financial point of view it will still be a massive hit to take compared to Champions League revenue.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

But on the topic of the Champions League, this midweek sees us back in action in the Round of 16 and we welcome RB Leipzig to White Hart Lane and given the earlier rumour mill speculation linking us and manager Jose Mourinho with an interest in Dayot Upamecano, we can certainly expect to see his name on the newsfeeds again this week.

For most fans, they will also be paying him slightly more attention just in case the rumours about the French Under 21 international are true.

As for us and this game though, we will just be hoping to keep our more recent run of form going and pick up another victory with further performance improvements to help keep lifting the spirits.

All eyes to 8pm and fingers crossed.

RB Leipzig...

Looks like s chance to over take Chelsea at the bridge. But we are so bad defensively will we just roll over as usuall.

Back to CL Def gonna be a tough tough game in both legs, hope the players can step up, take their chances and not to give away silly stupid goals away. COYS,

I wonder 123, did you say something similar before the Man City match? 😉

Chelsea are now just 1 point above Spurs. They have scored exactly the same amount of PL goals, 43. But have conceded 2 more than Spurs. They have won 1 more PL match but also lost 1 more than Spurs… I’d say we are petty evenly matched with them . But we do have the better recent form. So, who knows? A draw seems likely, if I were having punt that is…

As for RB Leipzig, I know they are doing well in Germany. I know they have some very talented young players… But so do we…. Again, who knows?

  • Geofspurs says:

There is every reason to believe (at the moment) that any mistakes our defence might make will be more than compensated by what our attack is capable of. Well, that’s how I see it. Anyway, I’m looking forward to a win.

Leipzig are a good side but not in the same form as they were earlier in the season. Its about pace with them so defend deep and don’t give them space to run in to. I’m sure Mourinho has figured out his tactics, he always does. Personally I look on it as something of a free hit. We aren’t going to win the Champions League so its a bonus while we rebuild the team. Priority is getting back in next season when hopefully we will be in much better shape. The United victory closes the race for fourth right up, everyone is dropping points so its probably down to who makes fewest mistakes over the rest of the season.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. That just about sums it all up.

I was watching breakfast TV a couple of hours ago. And they had Greaves’ Son and two grandchildren on the sofa… It was in a preview for the BT Sport documentary that is to be aired tonight. They showed some clips… I love watching that man score goals!

Also on the opposite sofa to his son was Mike England. An old favourite of mine from when I was a wee lad.

    Unfortunately I don’t subscribe to BTS anymore so I can’t watch it…

And so, I will have to find yet another dodgy stream for tonights game. And it will more than likely be a Portuguese TV commentary, as is often the case.

I can’t speak Portuguese but strangely I prefer it to most English commentary’s.

BBC Breakfast had Greavsie’s son on the sofa this morning with his son and daughter, they were discussing Jimmy’s career and the documentary on his life which is on BT Sport tonight. I was pleasantly surprised to find they also had Mike England on the sofa, he was one of my heroes in my teen years and it was so good to see him in such good shape for his age, he is still a commanding figure of a man and looks like he could still do a job for us at left centre back! :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    haha….. like minds HT!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Is there an echo in here, TQ2? Haha!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Then we almost simultaneously write haha as well… Spooky!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Don’t panic all! The game is tomorrow, not tonight. Whether I’m watching and hearing it in Portuguese or English!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Shame you no longer have BTS HT, I’ve got the App so will be watching the game tonight followed by the documentary which is on at 10.30pm.

I sometimes have to resort to watching games on foreign channels but prefer to just mute the sound if it’s in a language that is pure double dutch to me! :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I was referring to the Atletico v Liverpool game tonight and will of course be watching our game tomorrow as well.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Jod, many people would have seen last seasons champions league as a free hit but we ended up getting to the final and created some of the best memories in our history (Barcelona, Dortmund, City and Ajax).
Let’s go all out to qualify for the Champions League so that we can not prioritise the competition next season in order to make sure that we qualify for it again the following season. Football has gone mad. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Some great minds on here, HT & TQ, watched the same, brilliant reminder of my teen years.

Tonight I will be watching Pompey v Exeter, local team and all that lol!

As for us this week, 2 vip games, esp Saturdays visit to Chavford Bridge, both games will see how we are progressing and serve up a massive dollop of confidence, if results go our way, but still! for me there is the problem of important fixtures, which unbeknown to me for some reason in recent years we always seem to mess up, am just hoping that with JM at the helm of our good ship Spurs we will not hit an ice berg and get two positive results. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Bad news… Son is out injured and it could be for a while. He has a fracture to his right arm.

Step up Parrott? Lucas? Dele? Lo Celso? There’s goals in there… Somewhere!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

WOW…..Sonny out for ‘a number of weeks’ due to a fractured right arm!

This could hurt us very badly. 🙁

  • TQ2Spurs says:

What’s going on here HT? People will be starting to talk! lol

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Don’t forget Lamela and Fernandes HT.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

You never know TQ… There are definitely goal scorers in all that lot.

Mourinho has certainly had his work cut-out since his arrival… But I think he can work it out.
