Opinion: UCL qualification is the new minimum for Tottenham following bombshell announcement

|

There are few moments in sport when everyone has to take a step back and whiz through in their mind what they’re reading is true, but Friday night’s events did happen.

Valentine’s Day saw the bombshell being dropped that Manchester City will be banned from European competitions for the next two seasons as well as being fined a sum of £25m after being found guilty of committing ‘serious breaches’ of UEFA’s club licensing and FFP regulations as reported by BBC Sport.

The news sent shockwaves around the world football that caused a mass shock at first followed closely by more questions. Will Pep Guardiola stay beyond this season? What will some of Man City’s big-name stars do next? Will other clubs such as PSG face a similar punishment? But for many, there was only one thing on their mind.

Who the hell gets that fourth Champions League spot in the Premier League?

Will Tottenham qualify for next season's Champions League?

Yes

No

The possibility of no Man City in any European competition for the next two seasons will have massive ramifications on the Premier League should the ban remain in place following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and for Tottenham, this could change their entire season around for the better.

The main goal for Jose Mourinho this season at Spurs has seemingly been to get the north London club back into the Champions League next season, and with the prospect of a fifth-place finish being enough this year to qualify for the biggest club competition in European football, Tottenham now have no excuses for missing out on one of these elusive spots.

With the pressure of winning silverware also on the table for Mourinho, Spurs should now see qualifying for Champions League as very realistic achievement and something that must be viewed as a minimum requirement for the club this season.
