Opinion: Out-of-favour Tottenham man could stay, Pochettino better off keeping him

|

Victor Wanyama’s future at Tottenham has been uncertain after injury problems and a lack of playing time in recent months. The 27-year-old has made only five Premier League appearances this season, racking up just 156 minutes of football, but Spurs might retain his services past the summer.

After Mousa Dembele made the switch to the Chinese Super League in January, joining Guangzhou R&F on a two-and-a-half-year deal, Tottenham are now less likely to let Wanyama leave. Mauricio Pochettino has the Kenyan international, Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko as ball-winners and Harry Winks & Dele Alli as the more creative outlets.

It’s more likely Tottenham will sign an individual who is composed in possession – Adrien Rabiot (Paris Saint-Germain) – rather than replacing an existing player. Wanyama has been short of form and playing time this season, but he can build up his match fitness to fight for a starting place in 2019/20.

Pochettino has enough options without needing to delve into the transfer market and it would make little sense to sell and replace Wanyama given he still has two-and-a-half years left on his deal. He’s only racked up 395 minutes of football in all competitions this season, but Wanyama can turn things around in time.
