Opinion: Looking at the one man who is absolutely key to Tottenham’s season

|

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is a mess at the moment. Not many people are disputing that, but if they are to come through it and have a successful season in 2019/20, there will be a handful of players that will have to be at the top of their games and will absolutely crucial.

The likes of Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, the club’s main goalscorer and record signing, will obviously be key to that, but it’s a different midfield man as opposed to Ndombele and a different academy man called Harry as opposed to Kane who holds the key.

That man is quite obviously Harry Winks. The midfielder may not look like he does much on the face of things, but when he gets going in the middle of the park, his ability to set the tempo, keep Tottenham ticking by winning the ball back, recycling it and dragging Spurs forward is unmatched.

Moussa Sissoko is one who is fantastic in transition for the Lilywhites with his driving runs and ability to carry Tottenham from their own 18-yard box to their oppositions, but when it comes to passing out and bringing the team up the pitch with smart play and clever passing, Winks is second to none.

When he’s firing and at his very best, the England man is untouchable. The way he gets out of tight areas with his first touch, passing range and ability to turn out of trouble makes him a superb option, and putting him alongside one of either Ndombele or Sissoko in midfield is bound to work.

So far this season Winks has been averaging 0.8 key passes, 0.9 dribbles, 2.5 long balls and 64.8 passes per game at a success rate of 92.1%, as per WhoScored, he’s obviously a top player, and Mauricio Pochettino cannot afford to sleep on the 23-year-old as he aims to get Spurs back to the top after a shaky start to the season.
