Opinion: It’s time for U23’s ace to join Pochettino in Tottenham’s senior side

|

The sky is blue, water is wet, and Troy Parrott scored for Tottenham’s U23 side yesterday. All of these things are obvious to all of us, but what isn’t obvious is why the young Irishman hasn’t been given his first call-up from Mauricio Pochettino in competitive competitions.

Over the course of pre-season, we saw the youngster do everything superbly well as he turned out and got plenty of minutes for the Lilywhites against the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United, and he was desperately unlucky not to find himself on the scoresheet over the summer.

Now, though, the young hitman is finding himself on the scoresheet for the club’s youth sides, and he again fired one home for the club as they took on Olympiacos in a UEFA Youth League clash yesterday, although his opener couldn’t foreshadow a win, as the game was drawn 1-1.

Ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s clash with Olympiacos’ senior side, the gaffer claimed that he would use ‘all the players’ and rotate heavily in the coming weeks, as per Football.London, meaning that Troy Parrott surely looks to be in line for his debut, and if he is then it certainly is about time.

We’re not expecting to see the youngster oust Harry Kane in the starting lineup, but given that after Kane the two striking options are Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura, who are wide players but trade, having another man who’s grown up playing upfront will surely be a boost.

The first opportunity for Parrott looks like it will come against Colchester in the Carabao Cup if we were to be hedging our bets over when we’ll see him. That game is next Tuesday, but Pochettino is certainly not averse to throwing young players into the fray when things get tough, and it could be no different with Parrott.

However, as young Troy Parrott is yet to even sit on the bench for the senior side this season, the chances of him being involved against Leicester City seem slim to none, but as we say, it’s possible. A few good displays in the Carabao Cup and off the bench, though, and anything is possible.
