Opinion: It’s time for frustrating Tottenham man to step up after injury latest

|

This season is going to be an increasingly interesting one for Tottenham. First, the Lilywhites lost Harry Kane on New Year’s Day when he picked up a hamstring injury against Southampton and now the news has broken that Heung-Min Son has fractured his arm and could have played his last minutes this season (Tottenhamhotspur.com).

With that being the case, the issues over who will lead the line for the Lilywhites has surfaced, and it looks like the obvious option to fill the role is the Brazilian winger-cum-forward, Lucas Moura. However, the ex-PSG man has to step up his game if he’s to be an effective part-time striker for the club.

The key parts of Lucas’ game are his ability to beat a man with a dribble and his tendency to find the net as often as he does. However, when finding teammates the 27-year-old struggles and that shows when you factor in that he’s managed just nine assists in 93 games for the club (Transfermarkt).

Going forward, Tottenham fans are going to expect a lot from Lucas. The wide-man will have to shoulder plenty of the fans’ expectations, and his numbers this season will have to improve for him to manage to do that seeing as he’s scored just four Premier League goals in 24 appearances this season (WhoScored).

On the face of things that number looks poor, but when you look at the underlying figures, with the Brazilian averaging 1 key pass, 1.9 dribbles and 1.6 shots per game (WhoScored), but he’ll have to become more clinical if he’s to carry the goalscoring burden at Tottenham.

Can Lucas star in Kane and Son's absence?

Yes

No

The first chance Lucas has to do just that in the Premier League comes against Chelsea in just a few days time, and that game will not be at all an easy one at Stamford Bridge, but with the Blues vulnerable at home, what better way for Lucas to show he can lead the line than stepping up and delivering the Lilywhites with all three points.

Lucas Moura needs to step up? Lamela has been at the club nearly seven years. Yes: injuries, misunderstood, needs nurturing etc, etc. Utter tosh. He is supposed to be an attacking midfielder. That means goals and assists. His stats are woeful. Utter rubbish.
