Opinion: Despite shoddy Saturday Pochettino took a step in the right direction

|

The result on Saturday was simply not good enough by Spurs. The Lilywhites turned up to watch their side at the mightily impressive Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but they left disappointed having only drawn 1-1 at home to Sheffield United.

However, things shouldn’t be all doom and gloom amongst the fan base, as despite dropping two points against the Blades, the positives can certainly be taken into the international break and going forward, with a lot of fans already looking ahead to the next clash they face away at West Ham United.

The major thing that the Lilywhites should take away from this is the lineup that Mauricio Pochettino went with against Chris Wilder’s side. Pochettino got a lot of credit for his side he used in the week as the club overcame Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League, and on Saturday he went with a similar lineup.

The midfield and attack away in Serbia was the impressive combination of Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane, and once again the six of them lined up to start against the Blades, which is exactly what was needed.

Pochettino needs to instil some stability into the starting squad and get some consistency going. The fact that he went with the same side from the midfield up is key to that too. Whether or not this is going to continue is another matter, but it was a start for Poch and something that needs to carry on.

How will Tottenham fare against West Ham after the international break?

Win

Draw

Lose

Lo Celso looked quality throughout the clash, creating chances and not shying away from the action. Had the Lilywhites won the game the feeling amongst the fans would have been that the manager got everything right and there is a lot to be happy with, but the result has decided the reaction, even if signs are there that things are looking up.
