Opinion: £22.5m international ace deserves a run of games in the Tottenham side

|

Tottenham fans have got some real issues at full-back, and that’s understandably so given the neglect that the squad went through with two transfer windows passing in summer 2018 and January 2019 without a single new signing, however, at left-back, there’s a clear answer.

Danny Rose and his blood and thunder approach of intensity, passion and work rate is a solid option, but he has looked off the pace so far this season, and whilst injuries have meant he’s the current first choice, Ben Davies, the club’s £22.5m rated left-back deserves a look in.

The Welshman was in action for his country on the weekend and he set up former Spurs man Gareth Bale for a late first-half equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Croatia. It’s not the first time he’s been a provider this season either, as the left-back set up Lucas Moura for the Brazilian’s first of the season away at Olympiacos.

It must be said that Davies is the more solid option defensively than Rose too, even if he might lack the dynamism of the Doncaster-born England international. Over the course of Davies’ time at Spurs, though, he’s racked up 173 appearances, scored four times and assisted a further 17, and is quite obviously trusted by Poch.

With that in mind, it could be time for re-vamp at the back. A lot of media attention has been on the club’s issue at right-back, but giving Davies the role of first-choice on the left could take some heat off of an under-fire defensive line that could do with a couple of clean sheets to ease the pressure.

Rose didn’t play for England against Bulgaria last night as a result of a suspension he picked up against the Czech Republic for accumulating one too many yellow cards, and maybe the extended he break he’ll get by missing the Watford next weekend would do him some good, as well as allowing Davies a chance to show what he can do this season.
