Mourinho will need major investment if he is to achieve ambitious accolade with Spurs – Opinion

“We can’t win the Premier League this season. Next season, I’m not saying we will win it, but we can win it.”

The thought of Tottenham being a Premier League title challenger seems almost impossible to contemplate, and yet it has been something that has been talked about in previous seasons.

Spurs were considered to be both Leicester City and Chelsea’s main title rivals in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 Premier League seasons respectively, and under Mauricio Pochettino, the north London side has reached new heights in league finishes as well as reaching to the finals of both domestic and European cup competitions.

Can Mourinho one day win us a Premier League title?

Absolutely, he's a winner

No way, we're still Tottenham

And now with Jose Mourinho at the helm, the thought is almost too exciting to ignore that Spurs could genuinely be challengers for not just silverware but also the league title if the chips fall into place, but for the latter to happen, investment is needed.

Even though the Portuguese manager admitted to the press via Football London that he believes he can take Spurs to Premier League glory, there is no denying that is a task that cannot be achieved with what Tottenham are currently working with.

Mourinho is a manager well known across the football world for his free-spending mentality, with figures from Transfermarkt showing that the former Manchester United has spent the most money on new signings out of any head coach in the history of the sport, and these funds will be what Daniel Levy needs to cough up to make Tottenham champions of England.

With Spurs likely set for a massive rebuild this summer with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen all having their deals with the club expiring, Mourinho will need a seemingly substantial transfer budget to not only replace these key players but to also improve areas of the squad that can do with improvements.

Tottenham, with Manchester City and Liverpool at the peak of their powers, would be an unlikely Premier League winner with the gap between the top-two and the rest of the division as vast as it has ever been, but with the right signings and Mourinho at the wheel, absolutely anything can happen.
