Match Thread – Spursy Or A Statement – Time To Prove Our Credentials

|

Tottenham Hotspur have had a few hiccups in the 2020/21 campaign, but there is no denying it’s been a stellar season so far. Sitting top of the Premier League table and having qualified through for the latter stages of the Europa League has certainly seen us rack up the games and they don’t come much bigger than Wednesday evening’s clash with reigning PL Champions Liverpool.

12 games in, tied on 25 points and we have identical form on a W, D, L basis, with only goal difference separating us.

This match isn’t a decider, but naturally whoever does win, gains a small advantage and in many ways lays down a marker ahead of us ticking into January. We also can’t dismiss the added confidence boost such a win would bring, particularly for those hoping/fearing we will go Spursy and blow it.

Many will be expecting Liverpool to show a reaction after their poor Fulham performance, but we could be further boosted by a returning Gareth Bale after his illness, as manager Jose Mourinho was expecting him back for Wednesday. Japhet Tanganga and Erik Lamela remain out.

Fingers crossed we come out of this one in good spirits with Leicester City next up in an unforgiving fixture list.

Hi Danny thanks for the new thread.
I don’t think any of the top clubs covered themselves in glory at the weekend.
With the exception of Leicester and maybe Southampton.
Some of the usual suspects are missing in action at present, but a good or bad Christmas period could see a few teams breakaway from the pack.
There appears to be no out and out leader of the pack so far this season.
Even though Klopp is bemoaning his injury list , he does have a very good squad.
Hopefully both teams will go for it on Wednesday and we won’t get a tentative “chess game”
With each team not wanting to lose.

Great win for Wolves over the Chavs this evening!

  • BelgianSpur says:

Some interesting games for this match week.

Wolves have just beaten Chelsea. And while I’m not expecting WBA to perform a miracle against City (then again, I wasn’t expecting Fulham to frustrate Liverpool), I see the potential for more good results for us.

Arsenal need a reaction and Southampton could be the ones paying the price. Leicester-Everton could go either way.

    Fingers crossed.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

BS…….a rare occasion when you want the gooners to win!

Leicester are on fire at the moment but Everton are capable of sharing the spoils with them.

  • Allan says:

Well done Wolves . Brilliant 2nd goal akin to Sonny !!

I suspect Jose will play defensively which consists of poor passing and long balls to the opposition . However if we do go behind we will then hopefully see some good football from the team .

As usual optimistic and will be supporting from my favourite chair . Would be a cracking game if we could win by the odd goal not necessarily 1-0 although having said that it would keep us comfortably at the top .

  • BelgianSpur says:

City dropping points again. Whatever happens, it just doesn’t look like it’s going to be City’s year this year…

    • TQ2Spurs says:

BS….I think they are throwing everything behind winning the CL again this season.

      • TQ2Spurs says:

I mean prioritising again, not winning it again of course.

        • BelgianSpur says:

Unfortunately for them, we saw how that worked out last year. A Carabao Cup and that’s it. I think it’s a mistake, and it’s not like they don’t have a big and good enough squad to compete on multiple fronts – but it’s their problem!

        • Wentworth says:

I will be gutted if Jose bullies Dele out of Spurs. Such an exciting prospect who has enlivened our play. Jose loves to pick on someone to bully. Winks will be next. Jose is such a nasty little man. Can’t wait for him to go so we can hire a coach who really cares about Spurs and not his own pathetic ego. Even though he has taken us top, I still think he was a bad appointment.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    Wow, a strange season indeed!

I’ve gotta say….I love the young lad Conor Gallagher who is on loan at WBA from Chelsea’s academy. Wish he was in ours instead, very talented and plays with so much passion.

  • Geofspurs says:

Thanks for the thread, Danny. But I’m not sure the word ‘Spursy’ is a good choice in the title. It is a ‘put-down’ name for Spurs. Surely, losing away from home (should it happen) against the title holders cannot be deemed a reason to belittle our team. It would not be a disgrace and would only be our second loss of the season.

The way all of our main competition appears intent on us maintaining top spot suggests we might get a decent result in this one. Most seasons bring a few surprises but this one seems to bring more surprises than usual …. so far!

    • Danny Winter says:

Rare late night for me lately. No problems on the thread, was a little late because of other things but I should be back in a better pattern (and even write something different) come the New Year.

I respectfully disagree Geof, but I do more than understand your point and that’s why it wasn’t my original title thought, but for me – given the knockers and doubters – this is ‘the’ game to prove our credentials and mentality and show that when the big moments come, we don’t choke.

Now, we can both not choke but lose (or waste a host of chances and end up with a draw) – that’s football.

But I couldn’t shake Chelsea from my head when Leicester won and the knockers will be looking at this game with a mind to whether we are Spursy/choke. I chose Spursy as opposed to choke, purely because whether we win, lose, draw, I want us to prove the opposite via the performance (and then what happens, happens.) I want the statement regardless of the result – I didn’t mean that the statement would be a win.

But I clearly didn’t explain that thought in the article lol

  • Niall D says:

    Danny,
As opposed to to Geof, I understand where your “Spursy” comment comes from.
Let’s be honest it has been widely used, as we were seen as a team with so many flair players who could score but with a soft underbelly or we put a run of wins together only to lose to the likes of Stoke.
We are sitting top of the table and we’re almost “Spursy” at the weekend, it seems any chance we are given we some how fluff it, be it giving away a pen first minute of the CL or dropping a, 2-0 lead against the Chavs to hand Leicester the league.
But as Geoff says to go down against Liverpool away wouldn’t be quite Spursy.
The results tonite prove that this league isn’t predictable, and those who called us” rubbish” for beating WBA need to have a word with themselves.
Any team in this this league can grind out a result against the “better” sides.
We are currently top with a big game tomorrow night to move us ahead of the chasing pack, so let’s not be “Arsenally” and lose the plot.
    COYS.

  • Geofspurs says:

Danny …. No worries, mate, I get it. It just irritates me that Chelsea lost last night and United and Arsenal have had some horrible results, and every other team is beneath us on the table but they never seem to be called things like ‘Spursy’ (with all that infers) by the media or supporters. It’s just ‘a thing’ that frustrates me …. which, of course, is my problem. lol

ND …. ‘Arsenally’ …. Thanks, mate, that’s exactly my point. Should be more of it. : – )

    • Danny Winter says:

More than get that mate. Maybe we should try and get Arsenally trending or something? Chelsea and City are probably close enough?

  • BelgianSpur says:

To be fair, I am all for a bit of banter, but “Arsenally” may be a bit premature as well.

Sure, we can all enjoy the current plight they’re in, but their last trophy dates back a few months only, as they are the current FA Cup holders.

It’s difficut to make a case forthem choking in big occasions when their last success is still so recent…

I thik Danny makes a great point in his last comment. We could lose without it being “Spursy” but a lot will depend on the manner.

If indeed, the players aren’t up for it or we shoot ourselves in the foot, it will only reinforce a perception that “we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”.

If we put up a good fight, play well and get screwed by VAR, what more can you do?

    • Danny Winter says:

I have faith we’ll put it to bed tonight and we’ll get the performance. But I will be drinking just in case.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Tonight i expect more of the counter attacking by spurs. Liverpool at home will go for it and will leave space for sonnny & HK10. So we will need to move the ball quickly and accurately no margin for sloppy play, or laziness in tracking back. Again sonny / HK10 must be clinical in finishing. Aurier must not give away freekicks outside the box for Liverpool crosses in, as these rightside inswinging balls are very dangerous, as we witnessed again in sunday’s game at palace. Liverpool 1 Spurs 2. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I thought Pep was going to burst a blood vessel on the touchline last night, nothing wrong with showing a bit of passion! :- )

  • PompeyYid says:

Well its the day of the Game! tonight v the Bindippers, can we beat them on their own patch? thus we will upset/mess up their unbeaten home record?

My answer to the question is simple…YES we can, and why not somebody has to eventually, so why not us?

We all keep thinking, maybe even worrying about their attack, it is probably the same for them, both defenses are at times a bit iffy, so maybe just maybe! this then has a drawn result written all over it, lol!

Mind other things do have to be considered, luck, VAR etc.

But I really do believe we will win, albeit a tight game of chess, who blinks first. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY….their defence is definitely iffy without Van Dijk. I think we need to take the game to them in the way Fulham did.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’m with Geof. I have never (and never will) used the term S****y.

It has negative connotations to the club that I support. And if as a supporter of Spurs, I expect the club, its players and manager to have a positive outlook for playing its football and winning matches, then I feel that I should be just as positive too.

If we are poor tonight, then I will no doubt have some criticisms about them. The players, the manager or both. I might get angry. I might not… But this one match will not define my lifetimes support for them. And so I won’t be using any words that generalise and define my support for the club in a negative way. I’m always a proud Spur. Win, lose or draw. Not always a happy Spur, but proud, nevertheless.

I also agree with Jose in his dismissal of calling this match out as a way for Spurs to make a “statement” for the rest of this season. He basically said its just another match for us to try and win. It is so…

This is Liverpool at Anfield. Last years runaway PL champions who are currently on on equal league standing with Spurs as we go into this match. We have both won, drawn and lost the same amount of matches. But Liverpool have not lost at home for how long now?! ….. Spurs losing will not be the be all and end all of our season. Even if we are poor on the night, in doing so… (Perhaps a draw is on the cards, anyway?)

Winning will of course, be fantastic. But if we win playing poor football and being the inferior team, does that make any kind of positive statement for the rest of the season? Of course not. But it does give us 3 points. And that would be nice…

Jose will want to win and in whatever fashion. There’s no point in any of us insisting that it should be done with style. Why kid ourselves?!

Even if we do a Villa and thrash them tonight, it doesn’t make us PL champions. Not yet! That would also be quite nice though, wouldn’t it? LOL!

I just wanna see a fair game, played with a fair amount of passion, hard work and self- belief. From both teams! And whatever the result, I hope that the players and manager have at least given me some good reason to be proud. If not, then maybe next time… 😉 (But I’ll still not be using the S****y word. The dirty word)!

    Up the Spurs!

That’s Spurs with an urs, not Spurs with a “y”!

    Pool 1-3 Spurs!

  • Niall D says:

    HT
Hope again your prediction comes true.
Whilst I agree this just another 3 points if we win.
However, whilst I’m reluctant to call it a statement win, if either team wins tonight it is (I suppose)
Poignant as it will see the winning team start to pull away from the rest.
But it does have that something special if we do beat Liverpool at home.
Hope Mane and Salah don’t do their usual”best falls”on the 18 yrd box and VAR actually goes our way for a change.

  • PompeyYid says:

HT, I am with you there regards that term…S****Y, I do hate it, though I cannot say I have never said it, mainly in anger, speaking before thinking, reactionary, but every time I feel suicidal, so after the last time, cannot remember when, I promised/vowed never to use that term again.

After my previous post regards ours/theirs attack/defense, I believe this game will be decided in midfield, so get control of it lads and please give us a win.

Also as others if we lose tonight, it really will not be the end of the world/season, though in all honesty I think a lot of us will feel like it is, for at least 24hrs anyway lol! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Hi Niall.
I nearly always predict a healthy Spurs win. But if I was a superstitious man (which I’m not), then i should probably predict a draw. As the only occasion in this season that I didn’t predict a Spurs win on here, was versus Man United. When I predicted a draw! ….. What happened next? 😉

    Hi PY.
I have called Spurs many a ‘dirty’ word or name. But only in the heat of a match. I’m almost always okay about it (calm), not long after the 90 minutes and more is up. Especially in recent seasons.

I’ll be gutted if we do lose tonight… But I would’ve been more gutted if we had lost to Palace. In a funny way, us supporters seem to get more concerned about losing to the better teams than losing to the so called lesser teams… It’s a funny kind of contradiction. But I suppose I’m often the same in this, if I am to be honest…

    • PompeyYid says:

Hey HT, couldn’t agree with you more regards your last paragraph, funny ole game! as someone ? once said!

Haha “dirty words” to describe our lot in the heat of the moment, so bloody true. COYS

  • Parklaneyido says:

Not sure what you’re all on about….
Its got a super-defensive 8-0 Tottenham win allover it!

    Lloris
    Doherty, Dier, Alderweireld, Davies
    Sissoko, Hojbjerg
    Bale, N’dombele, Son
    Kane

    Goals:
    Kane (3)
    Son (2)
    Bale (2)
    N’dombele (1)

    COYS!

    • PompeyYid says:

As yourself PLY, am up for a win, but can I have some of what your drinking or taking lol! it seems to have a very happy up for it affect. Lol! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Given your score prediction Parklaneyido, I don’t know if you feel that will be the team or should be the team or the line-up you would like to see.

Whatever it is, I think you’re probably close to it except for the two full backs and Bale.

I would like to see Bale but is he fit enough? I reckon it will be Aurier and Reguilon at the back. My preference also. And Bergwijn not Bale…

But maybe Jose will surprise us tonight? With his line-up, formation and game-plan… Maybe not!
