Match Thread – Spurs Shouldn’t Be The Villans This Weekend

|

Although Tottenham Hotspur saw their ‘Winter Break’ interrupted owing to the FA Cup fourth round replay against Southampton, we took another much needed victory to book our place in the next round of the competition and with back to back wins under our belt once more, we’ll be hoping to see further improvement when we return to the pitch this weekend against Aston Villa.

The opening tie against the Premier League returners was a tricky affair to say the least, but we took a late 3-1 victory in the end as we opened our year up, and there are certainly reasons for positivity ahead of this one, as despite a reasonable scoring record, Villa certainly let plenty in at the other end of the pitch.

With a good few days off in the lead up to the game, players should be refreshed but we’ll have to see what the state of play is with any new injuries. Victory would push us back into fifth place in the table ahead of the impressive Sheffield United, so here’s hoping and back to back league wins would definitely give everyone a nice boost.

LOL – just heard the news about Man City – they’ll surely be out for atleast 1 season meaning 5th will be good enough this season to qualify for CL for next season. Whoop, Whoop – JM could well get his supposed £2m bonus for helping us qualify for next season’s CL. Massive result for us – now to just secure 5th spot but of course still going for 4th anyway.

Surprised it’s not been postponed, it has been absolutely wild down here in Devon overnight and had hardly any sleep due to the noise created by the wind. Really chuffed this morning to find six and a half metres of fence lying horizontal in my garden. :- (

Danny…..is it not time the bosses at Vital accept that the current IT guy doesn’t have the knowledge/ability to fix the issue and contract it out to someone who can?

And then the post appears immediately! lol

But not the following one! :- (

Well nearly here the game v Villa, am getting ready for a good win, any old win will do me as long as its 3pts. COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

An interesting quote from BBC Sport …. ‘only Liverpool and Manchester City have picked up more points since Jose Mourinho took over’. Well, I think it’s interesting!

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Reasonable line up. Good to see Davies back but central midfield looks to be too defensive with Dier partnering Winks. Can see problems in transitioning up the field and opening up a tight defence. Still we have some great attacking midfielders on the bench so let’s hope they come on sooner than later if needed.

Interesting team, with a week break and 2 of our better players on the bench, le celso and tanga, let hope Jose gets it right. Of course prob be another game of both teams to score.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Well, that’s the first of our 3 wins for the week….

    Phew!

    Up the Spurs!

  • PompeyYid says:

I did say as long as we get the 3pts, well we did, but didn’t we make hard work of it, but a win and 3pts is a win no matter how achieved. COYS

The life of a Spurs supporter is definitely a roller coaster ride!

So many wasted chances, especially Sonny, and yet he still scores two goals. :- )

Clever tactics by Dean Smith to play Grealish up Aurier, he was banking on another brain fart from him. Aurier was woeful in attack, he was dwelling on the ball too long and I don’t think he got one decent cross in all afternoon.

  • Geofspurs says:

This was a great game to watch between two teams who unparked their buses and drove off in top gear. The result could have been 3 – 8 (at least). We missed a load of opportunities (and they missed a few) but we had so many dynamic moves/breaks that carved through their defence at real pace. If we keep doing that we should keep scoring enough goals to get the result. Shouldn’t we? Well played to both teams.

  • Niall D says:

Look at the facts. We had 10 chances on target compared with their 4. One of their goals was scored by us. We deserved this result today. As I said when Jose arrived, he finds a way to win and it has happened yet again and if its true about City we’re now in CL places. COYS

  • El Jefe says:

Some good posts here especially Geof with firstly saying that only Liverpool and City have picked up more points than us since JM arrived – really interesting and great fact – VIVA JM and the boys lol! Also having watched the match agree again with Geof about the fact that both team’s went at it and that we had some great chances as did they but Niall D hits the nail on the head by spotting that we had 10 chances on target compared to their 4 and we scored an own goal meaning overall I agree that we deserved to win.

Still concerned about our defending and want new defender’s in the summer namely atleast a RB and a top LCB – can’t really stress the point strongly enough – we need some clean sheets to take the pressure off the front guys. Sonny was brilliant but thought all our attacking players played well – Bergwijn already looks a quality addition after 2 games only – long may it continue. Fernandes looks very interesting aswell.

Seeing as 5th is likely to be good enough to get CL for next season – I’m looking for a draw tomorrow night between Chelski and ManUre – keep Chelski within reach to give us a shot next Saturday and keep Utd at bay as they will be the strongest challengers for CL spots from the chasing pack – luckily they are missing Rashford even more than we’re missing HK10.

Hope we can turn Leipzig over on Wednesday but it will be difficult they are flying in Germany and will have had 1 more day’s rest than us and we had a very tough match today. How the hell does it make any sense to see us play today, Wednesday and then Saturday – where’s the protection from the Prem League for our CL clubs – ridiculous even we’ve just come off a 10 day break – not good enough and needs looking at.

  • Love totty says:

It’s all very well beating the likes of Villa by the odd goal but we’ll win nothing with calamitous defending. Was Jose saving Lo Celso and NDombele for Leipsig? Is he coaching cavalier tactics? Are the players actually enjoying heart in the mouth football?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I think the players enjoy winning, Love totty…

And they looked like they enjoyed playing vs Villa. So many well made chances to score. It won’t be long now before we give someone a. real good hiding if we can carry on in that fashion… Leipzig and/or Chelsea could well be the ones that get battered….

Well, you never know… Up the Spurs!
