Match Thread – Spurs Looking To Spear The Red Devils Ahead Of A Well Earned Break

|

Not exactly fresh from our stomping 7-2 victory over Maccabi Haifa on Thursday night, Tottenham Hotspur are back in action on Sunday as we make the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

We can again expect changes from manager Jose Mourinho given our ridiculous fixture list but for a variety of reasons, I imagine we’ll go pretty strong against United, especially as we are then going into the October international break and aren’t back in action until the 17th of the month.

We then just pray that international managers show a bit more sense than usual when it comes to our players.

Going into the break, getting that second Premier League win of the 2020/21 campaign, you’d have to acknowledge it as a very good start to the year given the minutes played and the progression we have made in Europe and the EFL Cup.

We’d have all taken that kind of start when we realised how cramped our fixtures would be over this period and we might even have Son Heung-Min back on the bench which would be a further boost.

Manchester United...

we robbed s,hampton…what a player hojberg is…awesome…..while some are crying for jose to go i’m liking what i see….players improving nicely…aurier been great last two matches…awesome today…..awesome game by all players…hojberg ran midfield…long may it continue…up to 5th….up the spurs….coys

62Rov. It’s a well known scenario when you put a good player into a team with better players than his prev. teammates, he will improve his ability (in most cases) I am pleased Hojberg is looking to be a better player than he was at southampton. What we needed is a moussa dembele type of DMF player, and hojberg is getting there, which is as you say was a steal of a transfer at £3m net spend for daniel levy.

There is a lot of media reporting about lamela’s behaviour yesterday, his actions were no different than man utd players diving / stimulation for penalties, and getting them. Also shaw should have been sent off as his tackle was very dangerous on Lucas, even ex top PL ref clattenberg said he was a lucky boy to remain on the pitch. Utd player Bailey is another one for his stamp on HK10.

So… all their complaining about lamela etc. is an attempt to cover their performance failings of being out played by spurs. 🙂

    Morning block 108 et al.

As I said earlier in the thread, I honestly believe the ref took pity on Manu in giving Shaw only a yellow card. Some might see this as an act of kindness in the circumstances but he should not have shown such sympathy and, as is universally agreed, Shaw should have been shown the red.

Niall D – You talk as if you could pick up a player like Hojberg anywhere. He’s a one off and we were lucky to get him. I can’t think of too many Spurs players over the years who have had his defensive abilities and the football skills to carry the ball forward. I have to go all the way back to Alan Mullery for a comparison. The point with Winks is that sometimes Mourinho will want to play a double pivot using Hojberg and Winks, he’s already done it in matches. You can’t just go out and buy another Hojberg you have to play with what you’ve got. What you hope is that Winks will learn from Hojberg and improve his own game.

    Hi Geof
Was also at that game where we won 7-2.
Can you remember the scorers ?

  • Allan says:

    Got the scorers

    Greaves 4
    Jones 2
    Saul 1

  • PompeyYid says:

My comments on yesterday’s game, we were excellent in all departments, defending as a team from front to back, defending from the front = how many goals, ok the usual obligatory pen for MU esp at OT, but did the players heads go down as would have happened before, answer no!

A particular mention for me has to be our midfield trio..Hoj, N’Dombele and Sissoko, they ruled it, Hoj brilliant, Sissoko very good, both giving their lot no peace, and lets not forget that crap player, lol!, N’Dombele sublime, made Pogba look a like a Sunday lge player.

We could esp me, go on all day how well we played, but I will not because we already know.

I note all the media is on about how crap MU were, nothing about Spurs making them play that way and how good we played, mind I like it that way, keeping quietly on the rails in this marathon league.

JM is getting us there slowly but surely.

I will not mention DH, yes I will, how are you today mate, entertaining enough for you. lol!

A very happy chappy Spurs fan signing off for now. COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

Allan …. Cheers, mate. I couldn’t remember who scored. I remember Pool beat us 5-2 on the Friday (that was an shock to all of us) and their supporters who came to the Lane on Monday were very vocal and expected a similar result. As you know, we killed them.

  • Geofspurs says:

Nobody has mentioned it (I think) but I thought Reguilon looked very useful when he went forward.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I wrote yesterday, that I thought with the players Jose has brought in that he had to be going for a more attacking brand of football. I mentioned that I could see some “good stuff” (from Spurs) on the horizon.

I can’t say that I was expecting it so soon, vs MU at OT…

Maybe going 1-0 down so soon was the trigger. Maybe not. I don’t care. We didn’t sit back and defend our lead once we had got it. Not this time. And, it paid off big time.

Maybe Jose has been taking note of some Spurs’ supporters wishes. Supporters like myself, DH, Wentworth, Geof etc…

Personally, I can’t have anything bad to say about Jose right now…. That would just seem so petty and bitchy. He has steered us through less than a months worth of many matches, in which our season could have been made or broken… And this past week in particular could well be the stepping stone to a very good season to come. It could well be the making of this team for the coming months… (What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger)……..

With the amount of squad rotation used by Jose and with the fantastic climax to it all yesterday, I have nothing but praise for the way he has worked his players into this….. I had my doubts for sure. But he proved me wrong in a big way… Credit where it’s due….

As for the players, they looked strong yesterday. They looked fit and they worked hard. And they enjoyed themselves… Oh, and they thrashed United 6-1 at OT! ; – )

TK, Jose didn’t invent the parking of the bus. He just coined a phrase… Yesterday, we parked the bus alright. But we parked it in the oppositions penalty area!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It’s like I said…….when Sonny is smiling the world is good, it’s even better when he is dancing! :- )

  • jod says:

Geofspurs – To me Reguilon has pace, strength, can tackle and cross a ball. In other words everything you want from a full back. What he doesn’t seem to have though is the ability to take men on, more what you’d expect from a winger than a full back admittedly. Yesterday I thought he got into a lot of good positions but didn’t do a lot with the ball when he got there. I suspect he’ll turn out a bit like Walker, quick going forward and getting back and at his best when he has space to run into.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. Once he has settled in we’ll have a clearer picture but I love the way he’s started.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

When we bought Reguilon, I knew of his reputation for being a promising young player. But I hadn’t watched him play. And so I YouTubed him… Of course, no player can be properly judged on a 5 to 10 minute showreel that only highlights the best bits.

But I watched him taking on players, passing them and putting in some very good balls from the wing. Both on the outside of defenders and cutting in. And the lad can tackle. And he is fast!

I think he has had a very confident and promising start, seeing as he had only just rocked up at Spurs a couple of weeks ago. And, was thrown straight in at the deep end vs Chelsea.

  • BelgianSpur says:

It’s funny how when you back a manager and give him time to work with his players, you start seeing results…

Naysayers have gone from “Jose out, the results are terrible” to “the results are better but the style is so negative” to “We’ve just scored 13 goals in 2 games, beat Chelsea and United in the last 3, but I still hate Jose’s personality” :-).

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I was thinking about you BS this past week. And I’ve missed you not being on here…

I hope you and your’e loved ones are well…

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

PompeyYid – I am very well this morning thank you and more than happy to be proved wrong. We were outstanding yesterday and showed great attacking intent. There were so many things I was impressed with, not least the way the team were at full tilt for the whole 90 minutes harrying United into mistakes until the final whistle. Long may it continue.
Special mentions apart from the obvious to Holjberg who ran the midfield, Aurier who had his best game for Spurs and finally to Jose. Wow, can’t believe I said that. COYS

    • PompeyYid says:

Donny, thankyou for your reply, nothing said about being proved wrong, you had an opinion, I respect that, and yes we were excellent. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

DH, It’s easy for those that have said it doesn’t matter how we win as long as we win, to now be smug about us when then indeed we win, in some style… But for me it just proves our point. That more attacking football, especially with the players we have, will pay better dividends. And that in truth it’s much more enjoyable to watch… And therefore the win, the 3 points, is much more pleasing. It’s also one helluva confidence boost for the players… Something I have said countless times on here… It’s not just about what us supporters might prefer to see. It’s what the players want as well… And yesterday (as TQ said) Sonny was smiling again…..

Is a boring 1-0 win at OT better than yesterday’s 6-1? Same 3 points!

    It’s a rhetorical question. 😉

    • PompeyYid says:

HT, yes! agree with you there esp the attacking paying dividends, but am in the “I do not care how we win as long as we get the 3pts camp”.

But yesterday was a bit special, mainly because it was at OT, loved it the way we destroyed them.

I will admit the players loved it also, may it carry on. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

It’s always about balance. And we were strong defensively yesterday as well as progressive in our attacking play…

It’s all I want. The best of both worlds…

We will see again the more pragmatic and defensive style of Jose’s game. But what impressed me yesterday was that we took the game to United at OT. And most of us (pro or anti JM) would not have expected it…

But the season is long… But, it’s a good start…

    Up the Spurs!

  • 123spurs says:

BS don’t get carried away, united have been poor and had 10 men for 60 min, u expect to get a few goals and win. Could of been a different story with lamela should of seen red, Now the villa result topped ours 10 fold.

    • PompeyYid says:

123, even up until Martial got his marching orders, we were all over MU like a rash, and with a bit more luck would have had at least 5 before that incident. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

123, if Lamela had got sent off it would have just mean’t 10 v 10. But we were bossing United before that incident. And they had a forward sent off. That should not have effected their defending in and around their penalty area as much as we managed to effect it with our relentless pressure on them… Or indeed their midfield. (We could also say; what if Shaw had been sent off?)

United were poor but that doesn’t negate the fact that we were very good.
